1.    School accidents

A school accident is any bodily injury to the insured that is directly or indirectly related to their condition as student, including sports, assemblies, study trips, practical or "end of degree" training and the like, as long as those activities where organized and authorised by the university. If such an accident occurs the student receives the following benefits:

-    Medical and pharmaceutical assistance. This includes hospitalisation and surgery. The student must go to a medical centre that is part of the public health system.
-    Economic indemnities for disability.
-    Total Permanent disability for studies already begun: indemnities from between €150.25 and €601.01.
-    Disability, unable to study and carry out basic needs: life long annual pension of €144, 24

The cost of travel incurred by a serious accident could be covered by the student insurance if the physician attending the student deems it an emergency.

-    Burial costs
-    If the accident causes death, the family of the victim will be paid 30.05€ for burial costs. If the accident occurs outside of the family residence, these costs can vary from €30.05 to €120.20
-    In addition, if the deceased student had dependants (wife/husband, children, permanently disabled parents who are over the age of 65, or brothers and sisters who are minors or permanently disabled) they will receive an indemnity of €300.51

The student has a period of one year after the accident to claim these benefits.

2.    Illness benefits

-    Total medical assistance, including hospitalisation and the following services: general surgery, neuropsychiatry, lung or bone tuberculosis and obstetrics.
-    Total pharmaceutical assistance in cases of hospitalisation. In outpatient treatment, 70% of the cost will be covered and the student will have to cover the other 30%.
-    Burial costs will be paid whenever the insured dies from complications of the illness in the two years following its diagnosis and when the student had been unable to continue studying until their death. The quantity and conditions are the same in the case of a school accident.
-    In certain cases the benefits may include physiotherapy, radiotherapy chemotherapy, artificial kidneys and maxillofacial surgery.

3.    Family hardship benefits

Family hardship benefits are meant to help students continue their studies until they earn a degree or doctorate in cases where the head of the family dies or the family goes bankrupt. This does not cover a permanent lack of financial resources to pay for studies.

-    The annual amounts of family hardship benefits vary from between €86.54 and €129.82, depending on the category of large family it is.

These benefits will be paid starting on the first day of the month following the cause of the hardship and it will be paid for as many years that the beneficiary needs to complete their degree (without having to repeat academic years). However, this benefit is only valid if the student is under 28 years old.

This benefit is compatible with any other kind of scholarship or school grant.

Once this benefit has been approved, the continuing hardship of the student and their academic progress will be examined each year.

In case the head of the family dies, the family income cannot be greater than €6,010.12 for each member of the family. Therefore, the family members that live with the student and their respective incomes will also be considered.

The exact documentation that must be submitted with the benefit application will depend on the type of aid solicited, but will always include the following:

-    National Identity Document or Libro de Familia (Spanish Family Registry Book). International students must show their passports, identity card, permit or residence card.
-    A receipt for registration payment which indicates the academic year, courses and payment of the student insurance.
-    A receipt for payment of student insurance in prior academic years, in order to justify a one-year contribution, except in the case of a school accident, family hardship death benefit and obstetrics (students who during the prior academic year completed studies not included in the student insurance are exempt from this).
