Students that have partially completed their studies in Spain and wish to validate them or adapt them to others that are taught in another centre of the same or different university can only validate or adapt them if they have already gained admission to that centre.
They must apply for the validation or adaptation of their studies in the secretariat of the centre that has admitted them.
This application must be accompanied by:
- A photocopy of their national identity card or passport.
- An academic certification issued by the original university that certifies that the student has completed the courses that they wish to validate.
- A certified transcript of those courses that describes the content of those courses.
The Rector of the university resolves validations, with a prior ruling by the Validation Commission which is composed of five professors in each faculty or college.
Transcripts validations will be resolved once every semester.
Validation of studies completed in Spain is free, unless they were completed in private centres.
General criteria for adaptation and validation of Spanish university studies
1. Among studies for the same official degree:
a) Until the study plans corresponding to the new structure of university studies established in Royal Decree 55/2005, January 21, are implemented, the entire first cycle of university studies will be adapted to two cycles earning a single official degree.
b) Core subjects or general subject matter that have been totally completed in the original centre will be adapted.
c) When core subjects of general subject matter have not been totally completed in the original centre only the courses whose subject matter and coursework are equivalent will be adapted.
d) In the case of obligatory or optional courses, or of specific subject matter determined at the university's discretion, only the courses whose subject matter and coursework are equivalent will be adapted. The student's university transcript will indicate the subject matter and courses that have been adapted. Any academic certification issued by the new university has to indicate that those courses were adapted and if the interested party asks for a grade certification they will be the grades received in the original university.
e) Free electives completed by the student in the original university will also be adapted.
2. Courses completed for different official degrees can be validated if they have the same content and coursework.
3. Grades received for validated courses will be worth the same number of points when calculating overall grade point average; the grades received for adapted courses in the original centre will be calculated; and acknowledged credits that are not verified will not be calculated.
