This course will include an introductory seminar to Old English and will focus on the practical analysis of medieval texts with particular attention to the language of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Beowulf, Trevisa, Chaucer and Caxton. The texts will be studied from the following perspectives:
1. Medieval English: Textual and cultural aspects.
2. Medieval English handwriting and spelling.
3. Medieval English sound systems and sound changes.
4. Medieval English morphology and syntax
5. Medieval English dialects.
6. The vocabulary of medieval English.
7. Language and style in Medieval English prose and verse.
