Evolution of mobility and transport in the Canary Islands towards the post-COVID situation

The University of La Laguna,through the Vice-Rectorate for Infrastructure and Sustainability, he University Institute for Regional Development and the Chair of Economics and Mobility Caja-Canarias-University of La Laguna, organized, within the framework of the European Mobility Week (2021), the online forum "Evolution of mobility and transport in the Canary Islands towards the post-COVID situation"«, held by video-conference, on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, from 12:00 to 13:30 h.

The COVID-19 pandemic is generating significant changes in mobility patterns. While we are seeing a short-term impact from mobility restrictions and reduced economic activity, we are also anticipating potentially positive long-term effects stemming from the implementation of teleworking and online teaching. In any case, we are facing a paradigm shift in our society that will influence, among other things, how Canary Islanders approach transportation and mobility. This forum aimed to provide an overview of the trends and challenges facing the Canary Islands in passenger transport and mobility, considering both inter-island air and sea transport, as well as inter-island transport in its various forms.

There were 4 speakers present:

  • José Luis Becerra Domínguez, Manager of BINTER Position: Bachelor of Science in Nautical Studies and Merchant Marine.
  • David Falcón Molina, Revenue Manager of Fred Olsen SA Bachelor of Statistics with Expert in Databases and Master in Big Data.
  • Ginés León Rodríguez, Head of the Big Data Department of TITSA. Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Master's degrees in Logistics, Applied Mathematics, and Big Data and Business Intelligence
  • Miguel Pintor Sepúlveda, Head of the Roads and Landscape Service of Tenerife Island Council, Civil Engineer and Master in Business Intelligence and Big Data

  • José Andrés Moreno Pérez, Director of the University Institute for Regional Development

Advanced Discrete Choice Models: Applications to Transportation

The Chair of Economics and Mobility at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the CajaCanarias Foundation organized an online seminar entitled "Advanced Discrete Choice Models: Applications to Transportation," which took place on July 14th from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. This seminar was given by Professor Emeritus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Dr. Juan de Dios Ortúzar Salas.

Juan de Dios Ortúzar Salas is considered one of the world's leading authorities on the application of discrete choice models to transport management, among other topics. He is co-author of a seminal book on the subject, 'Modelling Transport'.

Air transport in the Canary Islands. An unfinished task

The Chair of Economics and Mobility of the ULL_Fundación CajaCanarias participated in the Conference on 'Air Transport in the Canary Islands. An Unfinished Task', held at the Maspalomas Summer University, where they took part in a seminar held on July 1 and 2, 2021, which aimed to promote a comprehensive reflection on issues of great relevance in the Canary Islands Air Sector, addressed by professionals from the sector, as well as academics and scientists.

The director of the Chair of Economics and Mobility at ULL_Fundación CajaCanarias participated with a presentation entitled 'Post-pandemic strategies and objectives'.

Innovation in sustainable mobility

University Extension Activity organized by Turismo de Tenerife in collaboration with the CajaCanarias ULL Chair of Economics and Mobility, which was held online on June 22, 2021 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., within the framework of «Inter-departmental Seminars 2020/2021».

The objective of this online session was to showcase several innovative initiatives in Tenerife that work in line with SDG 9 'Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure'; as well as to learn about some of the research work currently being carried out at the University of La Laguna in this field.

There were several speakers:

  • Rosa Marina González Marrero. Director of the CajaCanarias ULL Chair of Economics and Mobility.
  • José María Pérez Hernández. Founder of Fun Bike Adventures, an active and adventure tourism company.
  • Elena Llarena García. An expert in renewable energy and water technology projects at ITER, she leads the technical side of the SEAFUEL project.
  • David Formoso Ginzos, COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Lovesharing, the first motosharing company in the Canary Islands, with a fleet of 100% electric motorcycles.
