The Chair

He Silbo Gomero It is a phonological system reduced to six phonemes with great sonic power, used for long-distance communication in an island context characterized by rugged terrain and significant challenges for land travel. It constitutes one of the most unique expressions of the traditional culture of the Canary Islands, its origins rooted in pre-Hispanic cultural traits, which the people of La Gomera have preserved to this day. Since 2009, it has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Currently, it is produced with whistles that imitate spoken Spanish and has been transmitted informally from generation to generation over the centuries and more formally from teachers to students in recent decades. It is practiced today by a large whistling community encompassing all ages and genders.
