  • University Hospitals

The University of La Laguna has agreements with the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Health for the teaching use of the island's two public hospitals providing specialized tertiary care. This includes both student placements at these hospitals for clinical rotations and the linking of teaching positions at the Faculty with clinical positions held by the same physicians at the hospitals.

  • University Hospital of the Canary Islands

A public hospital providing general medical care for the northern part of Tenerife and serving as a referral hospital for the island of La Palma. It has maintained its university affiliation since its founding in 1971 as the General and Clinical Hospital of Tenerife, coinciding with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine a few years later. Located in close proximity to the Health Sciences Campus, where the Faculty of Medicine is situated, it occupies a constructed area of 71,000 m². Due to its structural and technological capabilities, and in accordance with the needs expressed, it is accredited as a referral center for all Health Areas of the Canary Islands for services such as kidney and pancreatic transplantation, assisted reproduction, radiosurgery, prostate brachytherapy, and others. The University Hospital of the Canary Islands offers:

It has a usable floor area of 82,035 m².2, Of these, 26,930 square meters correspond to the main building, 23,980 to the inpatient wards, 3,532 to the emergency department, and two buildings of 19,663 and 7,430 square meters are designated for outpatient consultations. In addition to the main center, it has another building located approximately 900 meters away, called the Ofra Hospital, with 12,069 square meters of floor space.2 Focused on long-term hospitalization, it is located in the immediate vicinity of the Health Sciences campus and the Faculty of Medicine. Due to its structural and technological characteristics, and based on the needs expressed, it is accredited as a referral center for all Health Areas of the Canary Islands, the Liver Transplant service, and the Allergy service for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. 3. Forecast of the acquisition of the necessary material resources and services

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of La Laguna underwent an Institutional Evaluation Program between January 2007 and March 2008, the second phase of which involved an external evaluation by ANECA (National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation). The conclusions of this report identified areas for improvement in terms of material and structural resources, some of which have been undertaken and implemented, while others are still in the planning stage. The most significant of the latter are:

  • Improvements to classrooms include replacing furniture to provide ergonomic conditions and installing and improving lighting, sound, and air conditioning.
  • Construction of a new classroom building, with classrooms of adequate size for seminars, practical learning, and ECOEs. Alternatively, smaller classrooms could be created from some of the existing ones, the latter being planned for periods of overcrowding in the degree program, which were no longer in effect for years.
  • Carry out a complete installation of signage and posters throughout the Faculty, including the main facade.
  • Eliminate architectural barriers for disabled people, ensuring that they are required in all facilities.

These actions are part of the Master Plan for the Health Sciences Campus, for the renovation of buildings and integration of the constructions planned in the medium and long term.

Some of these services are entirely electronic and managed centrally, so the services that the José Pérez Vidal Library will primarily support are: reading room access, home loans of both books and laptops, and bibliographic information. To this end, a collection of specialized nursing materials has been provided, consisting of the core bibliography for the degree program, fully cataloged and ready for loan, as well as laptops and USB drives according to the established student-to-student ratio (at least one item for every 25 students). Intercampus lending has also been enabled so that students from La Palma can access materials from the University of La Laguna Library catalog that are not held in the Island Library's collection.
This collaboration is carried out under the collaboration agreement signed between the ULL and the Island Council of La Palma for the creation of a Teaching Unit on this island to teach Bachelor's Degree studies in Nursing
