It reaches up to 50 cm in height and has densely hairy stems. The basal leaves are petiolate, heart-shaped, with toothed margins, and are tomentose green on the upper surface and white on the underside; the cauline leaves are sessile, clasping the stem (amplexicaul), ovate-cordate, and have an acute apex. The flowers are arranged in radiate heads, with purple ray florets (outer) and yellow disc florets (center). Its fruits have pappus-like structures for wind dispersal. To distinguish it from Pericallis echinata, note that the latter has black glands on the involucre (bracts that line the receptacle of the flower heads).
