Recent research has shown that in many fields of scientific knowledge, from the humanities to medicine, social sciences and engineering, the variables of sex and gender are insufficiently considered. Stereotypes and biases persist in research and technological developments, which
\nThey often construct as a universal standard the realities, experiences and expectations of a group of people, mostly men, mostly white and of a certain economic level, and consider the realities of other people as deviations from the norm. Science, like any other field of activity,
\nHumanity is not free from the cultural and social conditions of its time. Gender stereotypes and the lower social value that women receive are often translated into a stereotyped and lesser consideration of their specific realities, whether social or biological, in research.<\/p>\n
In recent decades, gender studies have contributed to revealing and understanding areas of reality that were previously unexplored and also to reducing biases and errors in concepts and theories. In some cases, notably in the social sciences and humanities, they have contributed to important reformulations of the disciplinary foundations of some fields of knowledge. In other areas, there is still much to be done and, in order to move forward, it is necessary to foster a fertile crossover between gender studies and the rest of the fields of knowledge. Gender is, therefore, a clear area of innovation in science and technology.<\/p>\n
Following the signing of the Amsterdam Treaty in 1959, which established equality between men and women as a specific task of the European Community and as a cross-cutting objective affecting all Community tasks, the European Commission formalised its commitment to advance gender equality in research: (European Commission (1999) Women and science: mobilising women for the benefit of European research. Communication from the European Commission, Brussels). From then on, the European Union has made the introduction of gender into the content of research a priority, in its double version of, on the one hand, addressing the realities of both women and men and, on the other, promoting and considering gender-specific research to fill knowledge gaps. Thus, from the V and VI Framework Programmes for Research of the EU, the gender perspective has been introduced. And with these same objectives, the European Commission included in the VI Framework Programme a requirement that gender analysis be considered as one more variable, comparable to any other, whose relevance must be taken into account. Leading research institutions in the USA, Scandinavia and other European countries such as Austria are already requiring systematic consideration of gender and sex variables in the projects they fund. The United Nations, in its agreement on Science and Technology adopted in March 2011, also mentions the need to incorporate gender analysis into scientific research. The decision
\nThe decision adopted by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research of the European Union establishes that the integration of the gender dimension and gender equality will be addressed in all areas of research (Decision No 1982\/2006\/EC of 18\/12\/1986, IJ L412 of 30\/12\/2006, p. 1). This same statement has been extended in the current Horizon 2020 Programme, which considers gender as an analytical category that is transversal to the entire research programme.<\/p>\n
In our country, the inclusion and promotion of gender equality training, research and teaching programmes in a cross-cutting manner in university and scientific policy is present in all our most recent legislation: Organic Law 1\/2004 on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, Organic Law 3\/2007 on Effective Equality between Women and Men, Royal Decree 1393\/2007 establishing the regulation of university education and the LOMLOU (Organic Law 4\/2007). Likewise, the Strategic Plan for Equal Opportunities 2008\/2011, which was developed in 12 priority areas of action, also highlighted the opportunity to carry out university gender study programmes in line with national and community regulations. In this sense, Axis 4 (Innovation) is particularly relevant, as it refers to mainstreaming, the improvement of knowledge, the role of women and the feminisation of science and technology. The recently approved Spanish Law on Science and Technology includes an important article that addresses these community and national demands: \u201cThe Spanish science and technology strategy and the State Plan for scientific and technical research will promote the incorporation of the gender perspective as a transversal category in research and technology, so that its relevance is considered in all aspects of the process, from the definition of research priorities, research problems, explanatory theoretical frameworks, methods, data collection and interpretation, conclusions, technological applications and development, and proposals for future studies.\u201d In response to these demands of current European and Spanish regulations, the National R&D&I Programme has incorporated a specific management team since 2008, which, responding to the acronym FEM, articulates gender research in a transversal way to all specific areas of knowledge.<\/p>\n
The current proposal for a PhD in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies would therefore respond to and satisfy the demand generated by this scientific policy developed for more than a decade by the European Union and by Spanish legislation and which necessarily and urgently requires adequate training at the highest academic level. Only such training, preferably focused on research, will be able to provide the expert scientific analysis necessary for the consolidation of the aforementioned scientific and research policies.<\/p>\n
In this sense, the present proposal for a PhD in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies constitutes, on the one hand, an absolutely novel initiative in the Spanish university panorama, and on the other, a need derived from a long-standing demand for training. It is novel because it has no precedents in Spanish universities (on the international level, there are only similar initiatives in the USA and Italy); therefore, it would respond to a demand without any type of academic coverage at this time, which would support the strategic interest of this PhD in all participating universities and centres. But, on the other hand, it also satisfies a training demand already largely supported by the recognized research and teaching trajectory of the Institutes, Seminars and research groups that support it, some of them with more than 25 years of existence, and which until now has only found a channel through other doctorates framed in specific disciplines (law, history, literature, etc.; an example in this respect can be seen in the theses read in recent years on the subject of gender), but lacking until now its own disciplinary space. In this sense, the essential value of the degree would reside in the opportunity to generate a space of its own, which until now did not exist, for studies that since the eighties of the last century have been reaffirmed, first, in the curricular teaching of bachelor's and degree courses, and later, in the official postgraduate and master's courses adapted to the European Higher Education Area, present in a notable majority of the universities participating in the current programme, and which already require their own space in the Doctorate, as demonstrated by the abundant reading and defence of theses on gender issues carried out in recent years in different Spanish university departments and institutes, of which a brief list (only up to 10) is offered in this same document. Since the mid-1980s, research and teaching on gender issues has been one of the key points of strategic interest of universities such as the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Jaume I University of Castell\u00f3n, the University of Alicante, the University of Huelva, and the University of the Balearic Islands. This has also been the case since its inception at the younger participating universities such as the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. In all of them, important research teams (see Human Resources) underpin the quality and timeliness of this doctoral programme.<\/p>\n
In this sense, one of the main strengths of this programme lies in its interdisciplinary nature. In fact, although the header of this document, due to the technical limitations of the computer application, only includes one option for ISCED thematic codes, the PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies covers topics related to the social, legal, human and health sciences (see lines and research teams). This interdisciplinary nature is not a whimsical choice, but rather responds to the fact that the objectives of the doctoral programme are embedded within the promotion of gender equality demanded by European Community policies, national legislation, as well as the international commitments acquired by our country in terms of equality and non-discrimination between women and men. And, in this line, this Doctorate adopts as its main objective the gender transversality or mainstreaming approach, declared by the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995) as absolutely essential to achieve inclusive and equal public policies, a transversality that demands and requires interdisciplinary research and professional training in gender studies. And it is precisely this interdisciplinarity, which must necessarily articulate all training, research, study and analysis of gender, which imposes the interuniversity character of this program. Although interdisciplinarity has always distinguished gender studies and research, the truth is that the niches of expert knowledge in this regard are spread throughout the national university geography, so that it is not easy to satisfy a specialized demand in a single center or university. The grouping of universities, institutes and seminars responsible for the doctorate will guarantee that all those demands can be met despite the extreme specificity and scientific specialization that must characterize a doctorate. Thus, despite the fact that the research and teaching coordinated by the different centers comprising this program present, in all of them, characteristics highly focused on interdisciplinarity, a feature that - as has been said - distinguishes gender studies and research, the truth is that all of them, by tradition, human resources and scientific experience, present greater solvency in certain fields of scientific knowledge that make them complementary to each other.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the Gender History and Cultural Production line has researchers who have accumulated 15 six-year periods in total, 3 theses read in the last five years and 19 research projects.<\/p>\n
The University of HUELVA is a leader in three lines of research ordered according to the following:<\/p>\n
Without a doubt, the first line is Gender, History and Cultural Production, supported by a professor, Dr. Pilar Cuder Dom\u00ednguez, with a long academic and professional career. She coordinates several research projects. In addition to her, the line has a large number of female professors, specifically 8, of which 1, Dr. M\u00aa Luisa Candau Chac\u00f3n, has 4 six-year terms, another, Dr. Encarnaci\u00f3n Lemus Lopez, has 3 and five theses read in the last five years and the rest have 2 six-year terms, except 1 who is waiting for this call. Secondly, there is the Gender, Gender Violence and Education line, also endorsed by a specialist, Dr. Jos\u00e9 Manuel Coronel Llamas, with a significant background in his favour. At the University of LA LAGUNA, the following proposed lines of research are a priority: Gender, History and Cultural Production is the line in which most of the teaching staff of the University of La Laguna (ULL) participating in this doctoral program are enrolled. This is a line that has a long tradition at the University, on which multiple investigations have been carried out and 5 doctoral theses have been published in recent years, as well as several books, book chapters and articles in scientific journals.<\/p>\n
Although there are only three female professors from the ULL linked to the Gender, Gender Violence and Education line, it can be considered one of the priority lines. The aforementioned professors have extensive experience as Principal Investigators of research projects (five in recent years). Altogether, the number of theses read in recent years on this subject and directed by the aforementioned professors is seven. All of them have active six-year terms, and currently two have three six-year terms and one two. Likewise, the research activity in this line is not limited to the last five years but can be traced back to 1998 when Professor Pilar Matud Aznar began directing research projects on gender violence, an activity that she has continued continuously to date, having directed several projects, agreements and research contracts since then. The aforementioned professors have also published a large number of books, book chapters and scientific articles on the subject of the line, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate training activities.<\/p>\n
The Gender, Health and Sexualities line, which has two professors from the University of La Laguna, also has a long history at the university. It began with participation in research projects in 1989 and has continued ever since. Altogether, the two participating professors have been Principal Investigators of 11 research projects funded by public entities, two of which belong to the National R&D Plan and have been developed in the last five years, one of them having begun in 2013. They have directed four doctoral theses on this line and have published numerous articles in high-impact international journals, some of which have been, and continue to be, highly cited internationally.<\/p>\n
Finally, the line of Feminist Theories, Citizenship and Globalization is a priority since it has an important track record at the ULL. In fact, the principal investigator of the active research project referenced in this line belongs to the University of La Laguna. These are professors who stand out for having several research sections, supervised theses and also publications in high-impact international journals.<\/p>\n
The most representative line at the University of the BALEARIC ISLANDS is Gender, Gender Violence and Education. Good proof of this is that the active research project linked to this line is directed and developed by UIB staff and three of the five outstanding contributions in this line have been prepared by staff from this university.<\/p>\n
At the UNIVERSIDAD JAUME I DE CASTELL\u00d3N, the Gender, History and Cultural Production line is a priority. This line is supported by its line of publications. It publishes two scientific journals catalogued and included in the ISOC, CINDOC and LATINDEX. One of them: Aspark\u00eda. Investigaci\u00f3 Feminista, has been active since 1991, while Dossieres Feministes has been active since 1998. At the REY JUAN CARLOS University, the priority is first and foremost the line of research on Feminist Theories, Citizenship and Globalisation. It dates back to the 2005-2006 academic year, when Professor Ana de Miguel \u00c1lvarez, a renowned specialist in feminist theories and debates on citizenship, joined the URJC. Since that year, she has directed a research and seminar group that has just obtained its recognition as a Recognized Research Group by the URJC (2013).<\/p>\n
In 2010, the aforementioned Research Group submitted its application to the call for New Groups of the URJC and the Autonomous Community of Madrid (Research Projects of the Program for the Creation and Consolidation of Research Groups (BOCM, December 29, 2009), obtaining a score of 41 out of 50 in its evaluation at the ANEP and being awarded 20,000 euros for one year (URJC-CM 2010-CSH-5101). Within the framework of this project, and throughout 2011, the IP of the Project carried out a research stay at the Center for Women's Studies in La Plata (Buenos Aires) and participated as a guest speaker at the Congress. This stay led to the hosting of a doctoral student from La Plata and also to the celebration of the 1st International Conference on Theoretical Debates on Prostitution (March 2012). The consolidation of the line of research has occurred with the obtaining of a grant from the Center for Women's Studies in La Plata (Buenos Aires). a new Research Project in the latest competitive call for proposals of the VI National Plan for R&D&i. In this latest project (FF2012-37366) not only UNPL professors collaborate, but also those from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, with whom we have also established an open line of communication and research. Likewise, Professor Ana de Miguel has been invited, as the only European representative, together with the French philosopher Edgard Morin, to participate in the World Philosophy Day celebrated in Guatemala City 2013.
\nThe first doctoral thesis of the Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, which began in the 2010\/2011 academic year, has just been defended under the theme of this first important line of research at the Rey Juan Carlos University. The student Eva Palomo Cerme\u00f1o has defended the thesis Feminism and Socialism in the work of Sylvia Pankhurst: the debates around class, gender and sexuality in the context of the British suffragette movement.
