[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Justification of the title

The official proposal for the doctorate Atlantic Islands: History, Economy, Heritage and Legal-Institutional Framework responds to the need to complete the academic cycles of undergraduate and master's degrees that are being implemented in our universities within the European Higher Education Area.

Our approach aims, following the institutional strategies in R&D&i, which define that universities must have the doctorate at the centre of their actions, to offer high levels of quality, internationalisation, innovation, recognition and mobility. Within this spirit, we are interested in creating a stable framework that enables the collaboration of other organisations, entities and institutions involved in R&D&i, both nationally and internationally.

Ultimately, this doctoral program must meet the training needs of doctoral students, their methodological updating and, finally, their initiation into research through the final completion of the Doctoral Thesis.

The specific objectives of this programme are as follows: COMPLETE the academic cycles of Humanities, Legal and Social Sciences and Architecture; MEET the needs of students and scholarship holders, not only from the Universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, but also from the Universities of the Azores and Madeira, as well as Cape Verde and those corresponding to Latin America and Africa; RESPOND to the needs for quality training at doctoral level, in a comprehensive and open manner, offering society first-rate research; INCREASE the potential for quality research and innovation; DEVELOP basic and applied research for which these universities have significant potential in human resources, making our universities an international benchmark; GIVE PRIORITY to cutting-edge research lines in the various areas that comprise it, with projects at regional, state and European levels.

This PhD programme, within the framework of the Doctoral School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the corresponding institutions of the ULL, UAc and UAm, must succeed in bringing together different lines of research that will attempt to respond to both the guidelines defined by the Government of the Canary Islands (Strategy for the definition of priorities in the Higher Education offer in the Canary Islands 2010-2020), in which the explicit mention of heritage management and recovery is especially relevant, as well as by the ULPGC (Institutional Strategic Plan of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2011-2014), or the guidelines of the ULL, UAc and UAm.

Our project is aimed, in line with the above, at raising the level of excellence in research, increasing the levels of economic, social and cultural development of the Canary Islands, seeking collaborating partners, etc.

Our proposal aims to specialise the participating universities within the framework of the Atlantic Islands, with which we propose a close alliance, as a tricontinental platform for research in Atlantic Studies. Consequently, there is a close relationship between the CEI (Campus of International Excellence) and the two universities (regarding section 6.1 of the Report).

The Canary Islands Universities (ULPGC and ULL) participate jointly in the Regional Campus of International Excellence: "Tricontinental Atlantic Campus. One of the most important actions in the area of teaching improvement and adaptation to the EHEA is the launch of the ULL-ULPGC International School of Interuniversity Postgraduate Studies, some of whose main purposes are:

Development of programmes based on the combination and interrelation of the capacities of the two universities in their thematic specialisations with a view to the Europe-Africa-Latin America axis.

This also includes agreements with universities in these territories to incorporate them into postgraduate programmes.

  • Programs aimed at tricontinental talent, both in relation to teachers and students.

In the field of research, specifically, the development strategy will be based on:

  • Highlight strategic themes in thesis projects in the tricontinental scope.
  • Propose doctoral programs based on strategic themes and with the joint collaboration of the faculties, research centers and teachers most appropriate for each doctoral student.
  • Organization of interdisciplinary seminars, with the best research professors from the Campus and from other universities in the tricontinental area, that address strategic issues from different angles.
  • Dissemination of the School for attracting tricontinental talent
  • Unification of services for PhD students (registration, information, accommodation, etc.).

In this endeavour, the Doctoral Programme in Atlantic Islands: History, Heritage and Institutional Legal Framework, will highlight the characteristics of the Atlantic archipelagos, highlighting their geostrategic value, reinforcing the leadership of the Canary Islands as a dynamic element of this geographical area in scientific aspects of interest for the areas of specialisation of the CEI-CANARIAS and contributing to greater interuniversity interrelation, given the interuniversity nature of the teaching staff, which will belong to the two Canarian universities.
and the University of Azores and Madeira.

It should also be noted that the proposing universities are associated within the Network of Universities of the Ultraperipheral Regions of the European Union (UNAMUNO Network of Atlantic Islands), which facilitates the mobility of students and professors, as well as scientific and academic cooperation in the joint problems of the Atlantic islands that are the subject of this doctorate (CF. 1.4 of the Report).

The PhD program ATLANTIC ISLANDS: History, Economy, Heritage and Legal and Institutional Framework, in the specific case of the ULPGC, which leads it, is the result of the sum of previous experiences in doctoral programs carried out by the various departments and research groups that comprise it, as well as of an interdepartmental nature, in the same scientific field of the program now proposed. The Departments of Historical Sciences (DCH), Geography (DGEO), Basic Legal Sciences (DCJB) and Public Law (DDP), Art, City and Territory (DACT), Architectural Construction (DCA), Public Law (DDP), Art, City and Territory (DACT), Architectural Construction (DCA), Graphic Expression and Architectural Projects (DEGPA) have participated in these previous programs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
