The Faculties of Geography and History of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of La Laguna have given great support to the initiative of coordinating an Interuniversity Doctoral Programme, adapted to the new legislation. The aim is to ensure that, in addition to continuing the academic career of undergraduate and master's students, research, innovation and talent promotion activities can be developed, not only in the Archipelago but in the rest of Spain and Europe, paying special attention to the territorial framework of Africa and Latin America, with which the Islands have special cultural and economic ties.
This Programme is also enriched by the experience acquired in the different Doctoral Programmes organised by the Departments most directly related to the Faculties of Geography and History, some of which are already interdepartmental. Furthermore, at this stage of incorporation into the EHEA, we have a precedent of close interuniversity collaboration in the form of the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Archaeology by the ULL and the ULPGC, which has served as a testing laboratory for all types of teaching actions, organisation of exchanges and supervision of shared research work.
This doctoral programme is the result of the synergy of researchers who develop their work in the fields of Geography, History, Archaeology, the Study of Religions and Natural, Cultural and Linguistic Heritage. Many of the projects they direct or participate in constitute an example of transversal analysis typical of the context of the Humanities and Social Sciences, so that the lines of research proposed have the quality of being able to address problems and provide results from a multidisciplinary perspective in universal areas of application. That is why the Territory and Society Programme. Historical Evolution of a Tricontinental Space (Africa, America and Europe), DOCTESO, is the ideal framework to structure these perspectives and attract young talents, not only from the two universities that coordinate it, but from the entire extensive geographical area that encompasses its tricontinental character.
