One of the purposes of university-specific degrees is to contribute to lifelong learning from a university perspective. In this sense, the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) constitutes a reference for promoting lifelong learning. In line with this framework, postgraduate degrees guarantee, as a minimum, the following knowledge, skills, and competences, corresponding to EQF level 7:
G.1. That students possess and understand highly specialized knowledge, some of it at the forefront of a specific field of work or study, which lays the foundation for original thinking or research.
G.2. That students acquire critical awareness of knowledge issues in a specific field and at the point of articulation between different fields.
G.3. That students develop specialized skills for problem-solving in research or innovation, with a view to developing new knowledge and procedures, and integrating knowledge in various fields.
G.4. That students know how to manage and transform complex and unpredictable work or study contexts that require new strategic approaches.
G.5. That students are able to assume responsibilities regarding the development of knowledge and/or professional practices and the review of the strategic performance of teams.
The specific competencies that comprise this postgraduate degree are those recognized by the EORNA (National Association of Professionals) in its Common European Framework. Five key domains are identified:
● Professional/ethical/legal practice
● Nursing care and perioperative nursing practice
● Interpersonal relationships and communication
● Organizational, management and leadership skills
● Education, research and professional development
Domain 1 Competencies: Professional/Ethical/Legal Practice
The perioperative nurse analyzes, understands, and makes professional clinical judgment, upholds ethical practice, and maintains respect for the patient.
E.1.1. Carries out his/her practice in accordance with the legislation and professional practice guidelines relevant to nursing in general and perioperative nursing in particular.
E.1.2. Accepts professional responsibility.
E.1.3. Acts as an intermediary, liaison and advocate for the patient.
E.1.4. Respect other cultures, their beliefs, customs, religion and values
Domain 2 Competencies: Nursing Care and Perioperative Nursing Practice
The perioperative nurse provides quality nursing care by taking a holistic and individualized approach to the patient in accordance with legislation, policies, and practice guidelines.
E.2.1. Provides patient care by integrating evidence-based knowledge and practice
E.2.2. Provides a safe and effective environment for efficient patient care using the latest technology
E.2.3. Promotes health and safety in the workplace. Applies appropriate risk management strategies to prevent injuries.
E.2.4. Incorporates and complies with the principles of infection control and prevention in accordance with international guidelines
E.2.5. Handles tissue and fluid samples
E.2.6. Recognizes the importance of waste management strategies and promotes best practices
Domain 3 Competencies: Interpersonal relationships and communication.
The perioperative nurse establishes an efficient communication system with the patient/family, the multidisciplinary team and other collaborating individuals or departments that may be relevant.
E.3.1. Establishes and maintains effective interpersonal relationships with patients/families when necessary
E.3.2. Recognizes the essential requirements of effective teamwork to achieve the desired outcomes of high-quality patient care in the perioperative setting.
E.3.3. Employs appropriate communication strategies (verbal and written) to ensure accurate recording and transfer of information in the best interest of patient care.
E.3.4. Is able to resolve conflicts.
E.3.5. Is able to effectively communicate to the patient concepts related to the need for health promotion
Domain 4 Competencies: Organization, management and leadership skills.
The perioperative nurse leads and manages a group of colleagues and other professionals, respecting the organization, its purposes, and the results of perioperative activity.
E.4.1. Demonstrates effective leadership skills by acting as a role model, is consistent in providing high standards of care, is sufficiently motivated, and displays effective interpersonal skills based on mutual understanding and respect.
E.4.2. Conducts audits to ensure quality assurance of care.
E.4.3. Manages staff appropriately to ensure that care is provided appropriately.
E.4.4. Carries out the administration of financial resources.
E.4.5. Manage medical devices for safe use.
E.4.6. Employs effective organizational and management skills in providing quality patient care
Domain 5 Competencies: Education, research and professional development.
Perioperative nurses pursue education and professional development to build their careers, develop personally, and maintain the knowledge and skills required for a constantly evolving specialty. They conduct or assist in conducting research on perioperative nursing.
