What distinguishes a university master's degree from a continuing education master's degree?

The specific case of continuing education master's degrees could cause some confusion, as they coexist with the university master's degree program offered by the University of La Laguna.

Official degrees (Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate) are endorsed by the awarding university and are recognized by the State. Both for their implementation and to maintain their offer, they undergo external evaluation processes that guarantee their quality and allow their inclusion in the Registry of Universities, Centers, and Degrees (RUCT). The University's own degrees, for their part, are endorsed by the prestige of the university that awards them, which is responsible for ensuring their quality.

Until the entry into force of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the only master's degrees available in Spanish universities were University-Specific Degrees. Following the adaptation to the EHEA's university education system, many master's degrees became official degrees, but others have remained as University-Specific Degrees. Current regulations (RD 1393/2007) use the term "University Master's Degree" when referring to the degrees of official master's programs. Regulation of Own Degrees of the University of La Laguna establishes that, "to avoid confusion with official master's degrees, the name of the Own Master's Degrees according to Royal Decree 822/2021 of September 28 are now called «Master of Continuing Education in…».

One of the main differences between university master's degrees and continuing education degrees concerns the access to the Doctorate The regulations only allow access through a university master's degree, not through a continuing education master's degree.

As for the job opportunities, public service access is only possible with official qualifications. However, many companies highly value private qualifications when hiring qualified personnel. In the case of continuing education master's degrees, some are renowned in their sector due to their track record, the quality of their teaching staff, and their curriculum.

The access requirements The continuing education master's degrees at the University of La Laguna are the same as those for university master's degrees, and are adapted to the European Higher Education Area.
