Overview

This micro-credential trains professionals capable of leading the comprehensive development of film projects, from the creative phase to their industrial viability and strategic positioning in the audiovisual market. It provides training in the preparation of creative dossiers and production reports, as well as in professional pitching to production companies, investors, and national and international film festivals. Furthermore, it fosters emerging talent in the Canary Islands, strengthens employability in the audiovisual sector, and positions the University of La Laguna as a leader in specialized training in executive film production.

Goals

  • To train professionals capable of leading the comprehensive development of film projects from their initial phase, understanding the relationship between creation, industrial viability and strategic positioning in the contemporary audiovisual market.
  • To train students in the preparation of creative dossiers and professional production reports, adapted to the requirements of public calls, co-production markets, production companies, platforms and national and international festivals.
  • Develop advanced skills in professional pitching, providing students with verbal, visual and strategic tools for the effective presentation of projects to producers, investors, selection committees, co-production forums and industry agents.
  • To promote the development of first-time directors and emerging projects from the Canary Islands, fostering the professionalization of new talents and strengthening the territory's capacity to generate its own projects with an external projection.
  • To strengthen employability and professionalization in the Canary Islands audiovisual sector, contributing to the consolidation of specialized profiles in project development and executive production, aligned with the real needs of the local, state and international audiovisual ecosystem.
  • To position the ULL as an academic benchmark in specialized training in executive film production.

Access requirements

A university degree is not required to access this micro-credential. However, students wishing to access it must meet the following access requirements:

● Be between 25 and 64 years of age at the start date of training.

● Have, at a minimum, a High School Diploma or equivalent professional certificate.

● Have a National Identity Document or equivalent document that proves residence permit in Spain, at least during the period in which the microcredential is developed.

Academic program

Contents

  • The role of the executive producer in the development phase. Functions and responsibilities of the executive producer in the development of film projects. Relationship with the creative team, the script, and the project's industrial strategy. Decision-making in early stages, risk analysis, and defining the project's career path from its inception.
  • Project types: fiction and documentary. Specific characteristics of fiction and documentary projects in development. Differences in creative, production, and financing processes. Adaptation of development materials to each type and their respective professional circuits.
  • Development of debut films and emerging projects. Specific considerations for supporting first and second films. Development strategies adapted to new talent, budget constraints, and selective funding contexts. Identification of opportunities in labs, residencies, development grants, and specialized forums.

● National and international co-production. Introduction to co-production models as a key tool in the development and viability of film projects. Identification of partners, general co-production frameworks, distribution of responsibilities and rights, and basic criteria for preparing projects intended for national and international co-production environments.

● Creative dossier and production report. Structure and contents of the creative dossier: synopsis, treatment, aesthetic proposal, statement of intent, and authorial approach. Preparation of the production report: development strategy, preliminary financing plan, co-production, timeline, and initial budget estimates. Adaptation of materials for public calls for proposals, markets, and professional agents.

● Pitching and project presentation techniques. Design and preparation of the verbal and visual pitch. Building the project narrative, clarity of message, and adapting to the time and audience. Communication tools, body language, and use of supporting materials. Pitching simulations in real professional contexts.

Methodology and activities

  • Theoretical classes: expository, explanatory or demonstration sessions of the contents and knowledge.
  • Seminars, workshops, or other complementary activities (discussion forums, simulations, etc.): monographic sessions that encourage student participation. These are supervised by the course instructors.
  • Work: preparation of a study, essay, work… proposed in the subject, either individually or in a group following established guidelines.
  • Independent work: independent and self-regulated activity of the student based on the documentation and guidelines proposed in the subject, preparation of classes and exams, preparation of final reports, internship reports…
  • Presentations, debates and defenses of works and projects: activity through which students present works, exercises, projects… based on established criteria, demonstrating sufficiency and maturity in the acquisition of the planned competencies.
  • Assessment: continuous assessment tests and final exams. Tests may be in person or online, and may be written, oral, or consist of practical exercises.

The methodology would be as follows:

  • Lectures/expository method: presentation or explanation by the teaching staff.
  • Seminars: completing exercises, solving problems or practical cases, others.
  • Individual work: individual preparation of assignments/projects/reports, portfolio, 
  • Group work: group preparation of assignments, projects/reports, …
  • Assessment: written tests, oral tests, practical tests, …
  • Exhibitions, debates and presentation of works and projects: activities supervised by the teaching staff.
  • Active methodologies: cooperative learning, project-based learning, flipped classroom, service learning, game-based learning, case studies, problem solving… These are aimed at making learning a participatory process and are based on student agency.

Evaluation criteria

  • Attendance, participation or attitude in teaching activities, seminars, tutorials, etc.: monitoring student attendance and participation in teaching activities, carrying out activities during teaching sessions.
  • Written works, memoirs, internship reports, and projects: a document prepared on a topic or activity carried out, following the instructions established by the teaching staff.
  • Oral presentation and defense of topics, assignments, etc.: oral presentation on a topic related to the micro-credential content or on the results of an assignment, exercise, or project, followed by discussion with the teaching staff. This can be done individually or in a group.
