Location Manager

Overview

This micro-credential trains highly qualified professionals in location management for film and audiovisual productions, capable of coordinating permits, logistics, and relationships with institutions and property owners. It aims to address the existing training need in the Canary Islands, developing advanced skills in logistical planning, risk management, team coordination, and regulatory compliance for national and international film shoots. Furthermore, it strengthens employability, boosts the Canary Islands' audiovisual ecosystem, and contributes to the sustainable use of heritage, positioning the University of La Laguna as a leader in specialized training for film production and management.

Goals

To train highly qualified professionals in location management for film and audiovisual productions, capable of coordinating permits, logistics and relationships with institutions and property owners.
To fill the existing training gap in the Canary Islands in the area of location scouting, avoiding the need to travel abroad and promoting the retention of local talent.
Develop advanced skills in logistics planning, risk management, team coordination and regulatory compliance in national and international film shoots.
To strengthen the employability of graduates, facilitating their insertion into production companies, film commissions and audiovisual projects of different sizes and scope.
To promote the development of the Canary Islands audiovisual ecosystem, improving the professionalization of local filming and encouraging the attraction of national and international productions.
To contribute to the cultural enrichment and collective imagination of the Canary Islands, ensuring the correct management and sustainable use of spaces and heritage during filming.
To position the ULL as an academic benchmark in specialized training for film production and management, expanding its catalog of employment-oriented micro-credentials and strengthening the collaboration between university, business, and the cultural sector.

Access requirements

A university degree is not required to access this micro-credential. However, students wishing to access it must meet the following access requirements:

Be between 25 and 64 years of age at the start date of training.
Have at least a High School Diploma or equivalent professional certificate.
Have a National Identity Document or equivalent document that proves residence permit in Spain, at least during the period in which the microcredential is developed.

Role of the location manager
Functions and responsibilities of the location manager in film projects.
Coordination with the production team, direction and art direction.
Location types
Differences between filming outdoors, indoors, in urban, rural or heritage spaces.
Adaptation of planning and management according to the type of location and its impact on production.
Permit management and institutional relations
Administrative and legal procedures for obtaining filming permits. Interaction with city councils, film commissions, property owners, and local authorities. Conflict resolution and mediation in unforeseen situations.
Filming coordination and logistics
Organization of teams and resources on set, scheduling, transportation, signage, and safety. Contingency management and adaptation to changes during production.
Sustainability and preservation of the environment
Application of environmental and social sustainability criteria, minimization of impacts, respect for heritage and good practices in audiovisual production.
National and international projects
Participation in filming with national and international scope, adaptation to local and international regulations, and development of professional networks with production companies and film commissions to facilitate the execution of complex projects.

Methodology and activities

Theoretical classes: expository, explanatory or demonstration sessions of the contents and knowledge.
Seminars, workshops, or other complementary activities (discussion forums, simulations, etc.): monographic sessions that encourage student participation. These are supervised by the course instructors.
Work: preparation of a study, essay, work… proposed in the subject, either individually or in a group following established guidelines.
Independent work: independent and self-regulated activity of the student based on the documentation and guidelines proposed in the subject, preparation of classes and exams, preparation of final reports, internship reports…
Presentations, debates and defenses of works and projects: activity through which students present works, exercises, projects… based on established criteria, demonstrating sufficiency and maturity in the acquisition of the planned competencies.
Assessment: continuous assessment tests and final exams. Tests may be in person or online, and may be written, oral, or consist of practical exercises.

The methodology would be as follows:

Lectures/expository method: presentation or explanation by the teaching staff.
Seminars: completing exercises, solving problems or practical cases, others.
Individual work: individual preparation of assignments/projects/reports, portfolio,
Group work: group preparation of assignments, projects/reports, …
Assessment: written tests, oral tests, practical tests, …
Exhibitions, debates and presentation of works and projects: activities supervised by the teaching staff.
Active methodologies: cooperative learning, project-based learning, flipped classroom, service learning, game-based learning, case studies, problem solving… These are aimed at making learning a participatory process and are based on student agency.

Evaluation criteria

Attendance, participation or attitude in teaching activities, seminars, tutorials, etc.: monitoring student attendance and participation in teaching activities, carrying out activities during teaching sessions.
Written works, memoirs, internship reports, and projects: a document prepared on a topic or activity carried out, following the instructions established by the teaching staff.
Oral presentation and defense of topics, assignments, etc.: oral presentation on a topic related to the micro-credential content or on the results of an assignment, exercise, or project, followed by discussion with the teaching staff. This can be done individually or in a group.

Yanira de Armas Tosco

She is an audiovisual production professional specializing in location management, with extensive experience in major international productions. Her projects include Foundation, Marvel's Eternals, Wonder Woman 1984, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Jason Bourne.

Luis Fernando De Iturrate Cárdenes

Full Professor (Film Theory and History) at the University of La Laguna. His teaching and research focus on the study of film from historical, theoretical, and aesthetic perspectives within the field of audiovisual communication.
