Organic Law 2/2023, of March 22, of the University System (LOSU) specifically states in Article 6.4 that "Universities shall develop initial and ongoing training for the performance of teaching activities by their teaching staff and shall provide the necessary tools and resources to achieve quality teaching." Similarly, Article 67 establishes that "Universities shall guarantee the initial and ongoing teacher training of their teaching staff. Likewise, they shall establish initial training and lifelong training plans that guarantee the professional improvement of their teaching and research staff in the different areas of specialization of university activity, within the framework of strategic planning and the universities' own training priorities." Both articles establish the obligation of universities to offer training courses for teaching staff that contribute to the performance of their teaching functions and their professional development, both in terms of initial training and ongoing training.
The LOSU emphasizes the need for universities to promote the continuous development and improvement of their faculty throughout their professional careers, considering continuing education as an essential pillar for maintaining and improving the quality of teaching and research in the university setting.
The University of La Laguna's training program goes beyond meeting legal requirements; it is based on its ongoing commitment to educational excellence. This is demonstrated by the ongoing teacher training program for university professors, which has been offered through annual teacher training programs since the 2003-2004 academic year. This program is also aimed at new teachers, initially through training activities within the teacher training program and, subsequently, through the Expert in University Teaching (EDU-ULL) and the Expert in Digital Competencies program, starting in the 2020-2021 academic year. Recently, through the Expert Diploma in University Teaching Training (FDU-ULL), which replaces the EDU-ULL program, starting in the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Master's Degree in Continuing Education in University Teaching is conceived as a comprehensive teacher training program that is structured in a modular manner, based on the training provided in the aforementioned expert diplomas from the University of La Laguna, complemented by the university's training offerings, aligned with the master's objectives and competencies.
The Master's degree consists of a total of 60 credits, of which 6 correspond to the Final Degree Project and the rest are obtained through the recognition of credits resulting from the aforementioned training. It covers aspects of pedagogy, active teaching methodologies, learning assessment, tutoring, innovation, and classroom management, among others. Therefore, this degree is of strategic importance for the University of La Laguna, as it establishes the university's teaching model through the ongoing training it provides to its academic staff. It is also of utmost importance for the university system and for Canarian society.
