In an increasingly globalized and competitive world, professionals with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary academic background are needed. In this regard, the Double Degree in Spanish: Language and Literature and Classical Studies at the University of La Laguna offers comprehensive philological training in the study of two complementary disciplines: Spanish language and literature and classical antiquity.
On the one hand, classical antiquity and its cultural manifestations are the origin of the Western intellectual and artistic tradition, so its study offers a fundamental historical perspective for understanding Hispanic language and literature. On the other hand, Spanish literary culture and language occupy a prominent position on the international scene, and mastering relations with and about them is increasingly necessary in various sectors (business, diplomacy, education, commerce, tourism, etc.).
In linguistics, the double degree provides a solid foundation in the study of the Spanish language from all perspectives (phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.), with a strong focus on its growing international reach and its study as a foreign language. Knowledge of Greek and Latin, on the one hand, allows students to understand the structure of Spanish and other Romance languages and their historical evolution. On the other hand, it enables students to read ancient texts in their original language and helps them acquire and relate vocabulary shared with other modern languages.
From a literary perspective, the analysis of Greek and Latin texts, key figures in Western literature, enriches the study of Spanish and Latin American literature in its various genres and periods, as it delves into its roots and emphasizes its intertextual dialogue with classical tradition.
The Double Degree in Spanish: Language and Literature and Classical Studies is recommended for students who demonstrate a strong interest in subjects related to the core areas of knowledge: Spanish language, linguistics, Spanish and Latin American literature, literary theory, classical and modern languages, as well as other interdisciplinary studies related to the arts and humanities.
It is also recommended to have adequate oral and written expression skills, as well as a desire to acquire skills such as oral and written expression, critical thinking, autonomy, and initiative, among others. Students who have chosen the Social Sciences and Humanities track for post-secondary education are best suited to these studies.
The Double Degree in Spanish: Language and Literature and Classical Studies from the University of La Laguna provides a versatile profile, with a solid philological foundation, analytical skills, and cultural sensitivity, making it highly suitable for professional fields where linguistic and literary knowledge is interpreted, transmitted, or preserved:
