The general purpose of this master degree in Management in Marine Technologies is the acquisition of knowledge of the different approaches to research methodologies in the field of Maritime Technologies (both in quantitative and qualitative nature), the ability to formulate a relevant research problem and design the coherent and appropriate methodology for it.

Master's degree linked to the regulated profession of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, according to Real Decreto 973/2009, of June 12, which regulates the professional qualifications of the merchant navy (BOE of July 2, 2009).

  • From a professional point of view, this master's degree means that, once qualified as a Merchant Marine Engineer Officer, you will have the following Attributions:

    1. Act as engineer officer or first engineer officer on merchant ships without power limitations.

    2. Act as Chief Engineer (+24 mounth) or first engineer officer (+12 mounth) on merchant ship up to a power of 3000 kW.

    3. Act professionally in all activities related to the maritime profesión.

  • Ability to manage the exploitation and operation of ships and maritime artefacts, their safety, prevention of pollution and occupational risks, salvage and rescue, logistical support and maintenance
  • Ability to redesign and modify marine energy and safety equipment and installations, within the scope of their specialty, that is, operation, maintenance and exploitation
  • Ability to carry out research, development and innovation tasks in products, processes and methods in the field of Marine Technologies
  • Ability to analyze, assess and correct the social and environmental impact of technical solutions in the field of specialty
  • Ability to organize and lead multidisciplinary work groups in a multilingual environment, and to generate reports for the transmission of knowledge and results

  • Ensuring safe work practices are followed
  • Control the trim, stability and efforts
  • Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements and measures to guarantee the safety of human life at sea and the protection of the marine environment
  • Maintain the safety and protection of the ship, crew and passengers, as well as the good working order of the rescue, fire-fighting and other security systems

  • Plan and schedule operations
  • Operation, surveillance, performance evaluation and safety maintenance of the propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery

  • Manage the location and correction of faults of the electrical and electronic control equipment to put it in working order
  • Manage safe maintenance and repair procedures
  • Detect and define the cause of machine malfunctions and repair them

In accordance with the provisions of article 18 of Real Decreto 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the quality assurance procedure, to  access official master's education it will be It is necessary to be in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or, where appropriate, have another University Master’s degree, or another issued by a higher education institution of a country of the EuropeanHigher Education Area (EHEA) that authorizes the same access to Master’s studies.

Likewise, graduates in accordance with educational systems outside the EHEA will be able to access without the need for the homologation of their degrees, after verification by the university that they accredit a level of training equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degrees and that they empower the issuing country of the title for access to postgraduate education.

Access through this route will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested person, nor its recognition for other purposes than that of studying the Master’s degree.

As it is a degree that gives access to the professional title of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, the conditions of access to the master's degree must comply with the provisions of the
Resolution of the General Secretariat of Universities, of January 20, 2016 (BOE of June 23) which publishes the Agreement of the Council of Universities that establishes recommendations for the proposal by universities of application reports for official titles in the fields of Nautical and Maritime Transport, Marine Technologies, Marine Electrotechnics and Naval Radioelectronics. In accordance with the provisions of section 4.2 of Annex V of the aforementioned Resolution, regarding the official titles linked to the profession of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, the conditions for access to the Master’s Degree in Management in Marine Technologies are as follows:

  1. To access the Master linked to the profession of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, the interested person must have previously acquired the skills that are included in section 3 of annex II of this Agreement, which establishes the recommendations for the verification of the official university degrees linked to the exercise of the profession of Engineer Officer of the Merchant Navy, and their training be in accordance with that established in section 5 of annex II above.
  2. Likewise, access to the Master will be allowed when the degree’s title of the interested person, even if it does not cover all the specific subjects of the bachelor’s degree linked to the profession of Engineer Officer of the Merchant Marine, adjusts to the proposal of blocks and competences in accordance with annex II of the aforementioned Agreement of the Council of Universities.
  3. Likewise, those in possession of any other degree title will be able to access this Master’s degree, without prejudice to the fact that in this case the previous training supplements deemed necessary are established.
