Master Degree in Management in Nautical and Marine Transport

The general purpose of this master degree in Management in Management in Nautical and Marine Transport is the acquisition of knowledge of the different approaches to research methodologies in the field of Maritime Technologies (both in quantitative and qualitative nature), the ability to formulate a relevant research problem and design the coherent and appropriate methodology for it.

Master’s degree linked to the regulated profession of Captain of the Merchant Navy, according to Real Decreto 973/2009, of June 12, which regulates the professional qualifications of the merchant navy (BOE of July 2, 2009).

  • The main objectives of the Master in Nautical and Maritime Transport Management are: Proper use of the different instruments and tools for both data collection and analysis, understanding of the basic elements of research and innovation, knowledge of best-known research, understanding of the principles of research projects, including their fundamental processes and knowledge of the different areas of I+F+I in the field of Nautical Engineering and Maritime Transport.
  • From a professional point of view, this master's degree allows that once you have qualified as a Merchant Marine Pilot you will have the following Attributions:

    a) Act as a 2nd class pilot or first officer in merchant ships without power limitation.

    b) Serve as Captain of the Merchant Navy (+24 months) or First Officer (+12 months) on merchant ships up to a power of 3,000 kW.

    c) Professionally carry out all activities related to their maritime profession

In accordance with the provisions of article 18 of Real Decreto 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the quality assurance procedure, to access official master’s education it will be It is necessary to be in possession of an official Spanish university degree, or, where appropriate, have another University Master’s degree, or another issued by a higher education institution of a country of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that authorizes the same access to Master’s studies.

Likewise, graduates in accordance with educational systems outside the EHEA will be able to access without the need for the homologation of their degrees, after verification by the university that they accredit a level of training equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degrees and that they empower the issuing country of the title for access to postgraduate education. Access through this route will not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree held by the interested person, nor its recognition for other purposes than that of studying the Master’s degree.

As it is a degree that gives access to the professional title of Marchant Navy Captain, the conditions of access to the master’s degree must comply with the provisions of the Resolution of the General Secretariat of Universities, of January 20, 2016 (BOE of June 23) which publishes the Agreement of the Council of Universities that establishes recommendations for the proposal by universities of application reports for official titles in the fields of Nautical and Maritime Transport, Marine Technologies, Marine Electrotechnics and Naval Radioelectronics. In accordance with the provisions of section 4.2 of Annex V of the aforementioned Resolution, regarding the official titles linked to the profession of Chief Engineer of the Merchant Navy, the conditions for access to the Master’s Degree in Management in Nautical and Marine Transport are as follows:

  1. To access the Master linked to the profession of Captain of the Merchant Navy, the interested person must have previously acquired the skills that are included in section 3 of annex II of this Agreement, which establishes the recommendations for the verification of titles official university degrees linked to the exercise of the profession of pilot in the Merchant Navy, and their training must be in accordance with that established in section 5 of annex II above.
  2. Likewise, access to the Master will be allowed when the bachelor’s degree of the interested person, even if it does not cover all the specific subjects of the bachelor’s degree linked to the  profession of Merchant Navy Pilot, is adjusted to the block proposal and competencies in accordance with annex II of the aforementioned Agreement of the Council of Universities.
  3. Likewise, those in possession of any other bachelor's degree may access this Master’s

degree, without prejudice to the establishment of any prior training supplements
deemed necessary in this case.
