From the end of the 19th century, when official Spain considered our Latin American brothers and sisters to be nothing more than “scoundrels” (and the expression is Pío Baroja's) and the Spanish of America and its literature corruptions or degenerations of Peninsular Spanish and literature, Unamuno began to defend the importance of New World Spanish for the history of the Spanish language and of its writers and intellectuals for the history of our literature and the future of all Spanish speakers. To demonstrate this, one need only look at the countless studies our author dedicated to New World Spanish, to its most relevant writers and intellectuals, such as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Andrés Bello, Rufino José Cuervo, José Hernández, Asunción Silva, Santos Chocano, Grandmontagne, Amado Nervo, and Díaz Rodríguez, and to his most outstanding works, such as the Martín Fierro, For example, both in the Spanish press (especially in Reading. Journal of Science and Art (from Madrid) as well as in the Hispanic American press (primarily the Argentine press, which was the American forum he frequented most). This is so much the case that it is no exaggeration to say that Don Miguel was the true pioneer of the study of the language, literature, and history of the Americas in our country, and of the professorships and institutes that would later be created for their teaching, dissemination, and study. Precisely, analyzing what we could call "Don Miguel de Unamuno's Americanist ideology" and determining the influence it has exerted on both Spanish and American life is the objective of this edition of the course "Unamuno in Fuerteventura." To this end, we have the participation of Professor José Juan Batista Rodríguez, from the University of La Laguna, who will speak on "Unamuno in Ten Lesser-Known American Authors"; and Professor Asier Montero Ruiz, from the University of the Basque Country, who will discuss "Unamuno and Gaucho Culture: Towards a Popular Poetry." Professor Marcial Morera, from the University of La Laguna, will analyze the topic of Don Miguel's conception of American Spanish in the lecture "Unamuno and the Spanish of America"; Professor Isabel Castells Molina, from the University of La Laguna, will speak on the topic "The twilight of myths: Don Quixote and America in the thought of Unamuno"; and Professor María Paula Cantero, from the University of Salamanca, will address the topic of "Borges and Unamuno: encounters and disagreements of two emblems of literature in Spanish.".

This course, organized by the Miguel de Unamuno Cultural Chair in collaboration with the Fuerteventura Island Council, will be held in Puerto del Rosario from February 23 to 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Its main objectives are to analyze, through his literary, journalistic, and essayistic works, and to properly assess Miguel de Unamuno's profound and almost prophetic vision of the importance of the American world for Hispanic civilization, and to highlight his pioneering role in the creation of subjects and chairs for the study of American history, literature, and language in Spanish universities.

Aimed at primary and secondary school teachers, university students and the general public.

Academic Director: Marcial Morera.
