In this sense, genealogy is not limited to compiling lists of names or enumerating ancestors and descendants, but rather constitutes a discipline focused on the historical analysis of individual and family trajectories.

Currently, this field has a systematic set of methods and knowledge for family history research. These tools allow researchers to locate and examine sources such as publications, diaries, correspondence, and personal accounts, which can be applied to various areas of study, as they provide significant information about the social and cultural context.

From a social history perspective, genealogy is fundamental for reconstructing kinship networks, marriage strategies, mechanisms of social mobility, and processes of inheritance. The analysis of lineages and family ties allows us to identify local power dynamics, forms of community cohesion, and patterns of social reproduction that are not always reflected in other sources. It also facilitates the study of migratory phenomena, both internal and transoceanic, and contributes to understanding the historical configuration of elites and other groups whose capacity for political, economic, or cultural influence is limited compared to dominant groups.

In the field of administrative and institutional history, genealogy provides essential data for understanding the occupation of public offices, the transmission of positions, the development of patronage networks, and the formation of bureaucratic structures. The examination of personal files, notarial records, censuses, protocols, and judicial documents sheds light on the structure and functioning of institutions, as well as the relationships between administration, society, and territory.

Consequently, knowledge of ancestors acquires fundamental importance for understanding numerous contemporary historical, political, and social problems, as it offers interpretive keys that contribute to contextualizing current processes and dynamics from a structural and long-term perspective.

Bearing this in mind, and considering that the Canary Islands are a gateway to two continents, we propose this meeting to analyze the importance of our genealogy in the Canary Islands and in other parts of the Atlantic Ocean.

These conferences are a forum for discussion on genealogical research and family history conducted in the Canary Islands and the Americas, focusing on the Canary Islands through their connections with both the American continent and the other archipelagos of Macaronesia. In this regard, we establish the following basic objectives:

To address genealogy within the framework of the study of social history and the nature of legal, political, and administrative institutions.

Provide tools to search for information about ancestors.

To disseminate the results of research by professionals and amateurs on family history.

Aimed at students of the University of La Laguna, as well as anyone who wishes to begin to delve deeper into their family history.

Academic Director: José Antonio González Marrero.
