Yet, the Peak of Tenerife, considered one of the highest mountains on Earth that soon attracted the interest of the Royal Society, did arouse strange responses in Renaissance poetic imagination which variously depicted it as an icon of evil: it was an epitome of the world’s imperfection for Donne, a symbol of human ambition and pride for Marvell, and, for Milton, a fitting simile for Satan.<\/p>\n
