Se licenci\u00f3 y doctor\u00f3 en Farmacia en Madrid, donde obtuvo el Premio Extraordinario de Licenciatura y alcanz\u00f3 el grado de doctor <em>cum laude<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"1234\">Su principal campo de investigaci\u00f3n se centr\u00f3 en la creaci\u00f3n y desarrollo de diversas l\u00edneas dedicadas al estudio taxon\u00f3mico y sintaxon\u00f3mico de la flora y la vegetaci\u00f3n de Canarias. En 2011 recibi\u00f3 el <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Premio Canarias de Investigaci\u00f3n e Innovaci\u00f3n<\/span><\/span>. Posteriormente, en 2018, fue distinguido con el <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Premio Reinhold T\u00fcxen<\/span><\/span>, concedido por la <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Asociaci\u00f3n Alemana de Geobot\u00e1nica<\/span><\/span>, reconocimiento otorgado a investigadores internacionales que han realizado contribuciones destacadas en el campo de la Bot\u00e1nica. A \u00e9l se debe la implantaci\u00f3n en la ULL de los estudios fitosociol\u00f3gicos, as\u00ed como la formaci\u00f3n de toda una escuela de docentes y profesionales que ha contribuido de forma excepcional al conocimiento de la flora y la vegetaci\u00f3n de Canarias.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1623\">Fue decano de la Facultad de Biolog\u00eda de la ULL y decano coordinador del Centro Superior de Ciencias Agrarias. Adem\u00e1s, presidi\u00f3 el grupo de trabajo de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales del Plan Estrat\u00e9gico de Tenerife y fue miembro del Consejo Asesor del <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jard\u00edn Bot\u00e1nico Canario Viera y Clavijo<\/span><\/span>. Desde 1983 ejerci\u00f3 como presidente del Patronato del <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Parque Nacional del Teide<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" data-start=\"1625\" data-end=\"1951\">Tambi\u00e9n fue miembro del <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Museo Canario<\/span><\/span> de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, del <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Colegio Oficial de Bi\u00f3logos<\/span><\/span> y de la <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Real Sociedad Econ\u00f3mica de Amigos del Pa\u00eds de Tenerife<\/span><\/span>. Asimismo, perteneci\u00f3 al <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Instituto de Estudios Canarios<\/span><\/span> de La Laguna y fue miembro asesor de la <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Fundaci\u00f3n C\u00e9sar Manrique<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" data-start=\"1953\" data-end=\"2504\">A lo largo de su carrera acad\u00e9mica particip\u00f3 en m\u00e1s de 50 proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n y realiz\u00f3 numerosos trabajos cient\u00edficos de gran relevancia, entre los que destacan aquellos fundamentales para la delimitaci\u00f3n de buena parte de los espacios naturales protegidos de Canarias. Dirigi\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 40 memorias de licenciatura \u2014entre ellas seis realizadas en las universidades alemanas de Hannover y Erlangen\u2014, adem\u00e1s de m\u00e1s de 20 tesis doctorales.
