Pelayo se licenci\u00f3 en 1965 en Derecho por la ULL, especializ\u00e1ndose en temas centrados en la mujer y la familia. Al a\u00f1o siguiente se convirti\u00f3 en miembro del Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Tenerife, siendo la primera abogada canaria que accede a la Junta del Gobierno Colegial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La trayectoria de Pelayo, tanto en pol\u00edtica como en el ejercicio de la abogac\u00eda, ha estado marcada por su compromiso con las cuestiones de g\u00e9nero. As\u00ed, fue fundadora de la Delegaci\u00f3n Canaria de la Asociaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola de Mujeres Juristas (1976), representando a Espa\u00f1a en la Federaci\u00f3n Internacional de Mujeres con Carreras Jur\u00eddicas. Fund\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n la Asociaci\u00f3n Canaria de Mujeres Juristas, que presidi\u00f3 hasta su disoluci\u00f3n en 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">En 2006 Pelayo se uni\u00f3 al Comit\u00e9 Asesor de las Cortes con el objetivo de promover el reconocimiento de las mujeres en la vida pol\u00edtica. Como parlamentaria Pelayo destac\u00f3 por su trabajo en la legislaci\u00f3n que garantiz\u00f3 el derecho al divorcio. Asimismo, Pelayo llev\u00f3 a cabo un papel importante en las modificaciones del C\u00f3digo Civil en relaci\u00f3n con el derecho de familia y sucesiones, donde se logr\u00f3 la igualdad de derechos entre los hombres y mujeres, as\u00ed como el reconocimiento de los derechos de los hijos, independientemente de si fueron concebidos dentro o fuera del matrimonio. Se asegur\u00f3 la tutela y la responsabilidad de los padres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pelayo tambi\u00e9n particip\u00f3 en la reforma del C\u00f3digo Penal contribuyendo a la derogaci\u00f3n de los delitos de adulterio y amancebamiento, as\u00ed como a la despenalizaci\u00f3n del aborto y el uso de anticonceptivos. As\u00ed jug\u00f3 un papel importante en la regulaci\u00f3n de la interrupci\u00f3n voluntaria del embarazo y en la revisi\u00f3n de los tipos penales relacionados con los delitos contra la libertad sexual, asegurando que estuvieran en consonancia con la norma constitucional, entre otras contribuciones relevantes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">En 2019 Pelayo fue galardonada con el premio de Oro de Radio Club Tenerife en la categor\u00eda individual.
