Es reconocido como pionero y promotor de la astrof\u00edsica en Espa\u00f1a, destac\u00e1ndose por impulsar la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica y el desarrollo tecnol\u00f3gico en este campo. S\u00e1nchez es director fundador del Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias (IAC), donde desempe\u00f1\u00f3 un papel fundamental en el avance de la disciplina.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">En 1961, S\u00e1nchez realiz\u00f3 su primera visita a Tenerife, donde descubri\u00f3 la extraordinaria calidad astron\u00f3mica del cielo de Canarias. En 1964 logra que la Universidad de Burdeos instale el primer telescopio profesional en Tenerife. El inter\u00e9s por la calidad astron\u00f3mica del cielo canario lo llev\u00f3, en 1965, a ocupar la Adjunt\u00eda de F\u00edsica adscrita al Observatorio del Teide de la Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), donde estableci\u00f3 el primer grupo de investigaci\u00f3n de astrof\u00edsica en Espa\u00f1a, centrado en el estudio de la alta atm\u00f3sfera y el medio interplanetario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">En 1966, se convirti\u00f3 en el primer espa\u00f1ol en publicar un art\u00edculo de astrof\u00edsica en la prestigiosa revista internacional <em>Annals d\u2019Astrophysique<\/em>. Posteriormente, en 1969, present\u00f3 su tesis doctoral, la primera en Espa\u00f1a dedicada exclusivamente a la astrof\u00edsica. En 1970 ocupa la plaza de profesor de astrof\u00edsica de la ULL, la primera que se crea en Espa\u00f1a. En 1971 S\u00e1nchez es nombrado miembro de la Uni\u00f3n Astron\u00f3mica Internacional. En 1974, fue designado como el primer catedr\u00e1tico de Astrof\u00edsica de una universidad espa\u00f1ola, en la ULL. En 1975 se crea el IAC por acuerdo entre la ULL, el Centro Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (CSIC) y el Gobierno de Canarias.
