Mobility for Studies

Incoming students

International students from partner universities have the possibility to come to Universidad de La Laguna as part of an organised study exchange. In order to undertake an Erasmus+ study exchange period at Universidad de La Laguna, there must be a bilateral agreement between the corresponding departments of partner institutions. To check if an agreement with Universidad de La Laguna exists, please contact the responsible person at your home institution.

IMPORTANT: The Spanish language is the general language of instruction at the ULL.

All our university services are mostly offered in Spanish too. For this reason, international students should demonstrate a level of Spanish language proficiency, regardless of their nationality or country of residence.

Likewise, a minimum of B1 level of Spanish is a mandatory requirement for the Erasmus+ international students or  B2 or C1 if it’s indicated in the inter university agreement.

A Criminal Record Certificate is also required to undertake courses in the following studies:

  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Physiotherapy
  • Practicum courses in Education

The Doctoral and Graduate School (DGS) of the University of La Laguna (ULL) is interdisciplinary and encompasses all PhD and Master’s degree programmes in various fields of knowledge. It offers more than thirty programmes from the fields of Arts & Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social & Legal Sciences, and Engineering & Architecture.

Our official Master’s Courses are taught at the different campuses of the university. Foreign exchange students are free to choose courses from our official catalogue, provided there is a bilateral agreement signed between their university and ULL, and after consultation with the academic advisors at their home university.

More than twenty Doctoral Programmes are also offered by our university. Incoming PhD students are welcome to spend a research period at ULL, for which they have to apply under Erasmus Traineeship, as our programmes are not organized under the ECTS system.

Admission procedure

Master’s students

International Master’s students from partner universities are able to come to the ULL as part of an organised study exchange. In order to undergo an Erasmus+ study exchange period at the ULL, there must be a bilateral agreement in place between the corresponding departments of the partner institutions. To check whether an agreement with the ULL exists, please contact the person responsible for Erasmus+ at your home institution.

In order to apply for the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme at the University of La Laguna, the International Deputy Vice Chancellor’s office provides a complete guide & information.

If you wish to apply as a postgraduate student, please read and carefully follow the instructions provided by the Erasmus office.

Once nominated by the home university, postgraduate students should choose their courses from among our Master’s programmes in order to be accepted by the DGS. The courses catalog is available at this link.

Postgraduate students who cannot find a Master’s programme related to their field of interest may choose undergraduate courses from the last year of any degree (4th year). However, it will not be possible to combine Bachelor and Master’s Courses in the Learning Agreement.

Erasmus+ international students cannot do external practice (“Prácticas Externas”) during their stay.

Master’s Thesis: Erasmus+ international students cannot be accepted to work on their Master’s Thesis (“Trabajo de Fin de Máster”) as a part of their stay. For those students who wish to spend a period of research at ULL it is mandatory to be nominated under Erasmus+ Traineeship.

Continuous assessment, based on course attendance, constitutes the main evaluation system/principle at ULL. A minimum of 80% course attendance is generally required.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Applicants must be aware that some Master’s Degrees are in high demand and have quotas of students that can be accepted. Thus, not all Erasmus applications can be admitted.

The DGS has to consult the academic committees of all Master’s Degrees every year in order to update the information regarding quotas.

Due to its particularities, the Master’s Degree in Marine Biology: Biodiversity and Conservation cannot accept Erasmus students.

Several other Master’s Degrees, such as the Master in Terrestrial Biodiversity and Conservation in Islands and the Master in General Health Psychology have specific requirements for acceptance of Erasmus students. Those who wish to apply for courses in those Master’s Degrees have to contact our International Mobility Coordinator (movipos@ull.edu.es) before filling their Learning Agreements.

General language skills and requirements for postgraduate students

Spanish is the language of instruction at the ULL. Most of our university services are also offered in Spanish. For this reason, international students should demonstrate a level of Spanish language proficiency, regardless of their nationality or country of residence. A minimum of B1 level of Spanish is required for the Erasmus+ international students.

Spanish courses for foreigners are offered by our Language Service, but they do not belong to any official programme and, therefore, will not be included in the student’s Transcript of Records. Please, notice that Spanish courses for foreigners should not be included in the Learning Agreement.

English language requirements for international students: The minimum level of English required for all ULL Master’s courses is B1. Most Master’s Degrees also have an English language requirement that may vary among programmes. The specific English language requirements are explained in each programme. We recommend to read them carefully.

ErasmusPlay

The European Community promotes interuniversity co-operation as a means of improving the quality of education for the benefit of students and higher education institutions and considers student mobility is an important element of this interuniversity co-operation. The recognition of studies and diplomas is a prerequisite for the creation of an Open European area of education and training where students and teachers can travel freely within the European Community. For this purpose, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was developed as a pilot scheme established within the Erasmus programme in order to improve academic recognition of studies completed abroad.

Main characteristics of ECTS

This system ensures transparency and is designed to strengthen the ties among the various institutions and to widen the course offerings made available to students. Additionally, it makes it easier for institutions to recognise the learning achievements of students through the use of commonly understood measurements- credits and grades- and it also provides the means to interpret national systems of higher education.

The ECTS system is based on three core elements:

  • Information (on study programmes and student achievement)
  • Mutual agreement (between the partner institutions and the student)
  • The use of ECTS credits (to indicate student workload)

These three core elements are made operational through the use of three key documents:

1) the information package

2) the application form/learning agreement

3) the transcript of records

Full academic recognition is a conditio sine qua non for student mobility in the framework of the Erasmus and Socrates programmes. Full academic recognition means that the study period abroad (including examinations or other forms of assessment ) replaces a comparable period of study at the home university (including examinations or other forms of assessment), though the content of the agreed study programme may differ.

ECTS provides transparency through the following means: ECTS credits, which are numerical values allocated to course units to describe the workload required to complete them. They reflect the amount of work each course unit requires in relation to the total amount of work necessary to complete a full year of study at the institution. This includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, private study and examinations or other assessment activities. ECTS is thus based on a full student workload and not limited to contact hours only.

In ECTS, 60 credits represent the workload for an entire year and, generally, 30 credits  for a semester and 20 credits for a term.

The ECTS information package supplies written information to students and staff on institutions, departments/faculties, the organisation and structure of studies and course units.

The ECTS transfer of records presents students’ learning achievements in a comprehensive way and is commonly understood and easily transferable from one institution to another. Good communication and flexibility are also needed to facilitate the academic recognition of studies completed or taken abroad. In this respect, the ECTS coordinators have an important role to play, as they are responsible for the academic and administrative aspects of ECTS.
