Me refiero a una variedad del populismo que alude a los conceptos propios de la ciencia: <\/span><b>el populismo cient\u00edfico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El populismo cient\u00edfico se manifiesta en el antagonismo mostrado entre \u00abla gente corriente\u00bb y el sentido com\u00fan frente a las \u00e9lites acad\u00e9micas y los conocimientos cient\u00edficos. Esta posici\u00f3n cuestiona a las \u00e9lites acad\u00e9micas y su autoridad para tomar decisiones en lo que a la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica se refiere, desde la convicci\u00f3n de que la verdad, tal como est\u00e1 descrita por estos, es inferior al sentido com\u00fan. El populismo cient\u00edfico presenta una de sus manifestaciones m\u00e1s evidentes cuando actores pol\u00edticos, sociales o medi\u00e1ticos, sobre la base de ideas pseudocient\u00edficas, rechazan la evidencia emp\u00edrica y utiliza discursos emocionales para tergiversar el conocimiento cient\u00edfico y respaldar sus intereses, deslegitimar a la comunidad cient\u00edfica o simplificar problemas complejos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">En un <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.58121\/a3wy-2444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reciente estudio de la FECYT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> se ha analizado la situaci\u00f3n de nuestro pa\u00eds en relaci\u00f3n con este fen\u00f3meno. Se analizaron cuatro dimensiones relacionadas con el populismo cient\u00edfico. La primera es la denominada <\/span><b>\u201cconcepci\u00f3n positiva de la gente corriente\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, en virtud de la cual se sostiene la creencia de que el p\u00fablico general no especializado posee un sentido com\u00fan, una sabidur\u00eda o una intuici\u00f3n natural que es m\u00e1s fiable, moral o aut\u00e9ntica que el conocimiento cient\u00edfico o experto. La segunda es la denominada <\/span><b>\u201cconcepci\u00f3n negativa sobre las \u00e9lite acad\u00e9micas\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; o, expresado de otra manera, la actitud cr\u00edtica, de desconfianza o rechazo hacia la comunidad cient\u00edfica, los expertos e instituciones de investigaci\u00f3n y, en general, hacia el sistema acad\u00e9mico. Esta actitud es la que lleva a considerar a los cient\u00edficos y expertas, no como autoridades confiables, sino como <\/span><b>grupos alejados, potencialmente corruptos o antidemocr\u00e1ticos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, que deben ser cuestionados y reemplazados por el conocimiento y las voces de la ciudadan\u00eda com\u00fan. Una tercera dimensi\u00f3n es <\/span><b>la demanda de soberan\u00eda para decidir sobre cuestiones relacionadas con la ciencia.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Se explicita as\u00ed la creencia de que <\/span><b>la ciudadan\u00eda deber\u00eda tener un papel directo, decisivo y prioritario en la toma de decisiones cient\u00edficas y tecnol\u00f3gicas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Por \u00faltimo se considera <\/span><b>la exigencia de poder determinar qu\u00e9 es \u201cconocimiento verdadero\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. La idea, en este caso, es que <\/span><b>la gente com\u00fan deber\u00eda tener el poder de decidir qu\u00e9 es verdadero y qu\u00e9 no en el \u00e1mbito del conocimiento cient\u00edfico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, en lugar de aceptar las definiciones y validaciones de la verdad que tradicionalmente han estado en manos de la comunidad cient\u00edfica y acad\u00e9mica.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">En el estudio antes citado se encontr\u00f3 que algo m\u00e1s del <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">30% de la muestra mostr\u00f3 una concepci\u00f3n positiva de la gente corriente<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, mientras que casi un <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">20% est\u00e1 muy de acuerdo con las ideas de que existe una \u00e9lite acad\u00e9mica.<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Un porcentaje similar (21,5%) considera que la gente deber\u00eda de tener voz a la hora de decidir las prioridades de la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> y un <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">17,6% reclama la experiencia vital o el sentido com\u00fan como fuentes m\u00e1s fiables que la ciencia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El populismo cient\u00edfico constituye una seria amenaza para el desarrollo social y econ\u00f3mico, desde el momento que genera desinformaci\u00f3n y socava la confianza en el conocimiento. El aumento de esta corriente social contribuye a la deslegitimaci\u00f3n de la ciencia y de la comunidad cient\u00edfica, que corre paralela al rechazo del valor de las evidencias emp\u00edricas. En la medida que esto se ponga en cuesti\u00f3n se ver\u00e1n afectadas la toma de decisiones informadas en sectores clave como la salud, el medioambiente y la econom\u00eda; se impedir\u00e1 el desarrollo tecnol\u00f3gico y se contribuye a la polarizaci\u00f3n social y pol\u00edtica, al dividir<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a la sociedad entre quienes conf\u00edan en la evidencia y quienes se adhieren a narrativas pseudocient\u00edficas.<\/span><\/p><p><b>\u00bfQu\u00e9 se puede (y debe) hacer desde las instituciones de educaci\u00f3n superior para combatir el populismo cient\u00edfico?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Las universidades, como garantes de la ciencia, la raz\u00f3n y el humanismo tienen la responsabilidad de reivindicar el valor de la ciencia frente a planteamientos cient\u00edficos. Y para ello son varias las l\u00edneas de actuaci\u00f3n que se pueden desarrollar entre las cuales destacar\u00e9 algunas que, no por conocidas, son menos pertinentes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La primera tiene que ver con la promoci\u00f3n, \u201chacia adentro\u201d de las universidades del pensamiento cr\u00edtico y del valor del m\u00e9todo cient\u00edfico y de la evaluaci\u00f3n de las fuentes de informaci\u00f3n. Se trata de <\/span><b>ense\u00f1ar ciencia no como un resultado sino como un proceso.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Lejos de ser un conjunto de verdades absolutas, la ciencia es un proceso din\u00e1mico de b\u00fasqueda, de revisi\u00f3n y de mejora constante. En este sentido es necesario fomentar entre nuestros estudiantes la idea de que<\/span><b> la incertidumbre es consustancial al proceso cient\u00edfico y que este tiene fronteras bien conocidas.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Otras medidas son las orientadas \u201chacia afuera\u201d de las instituciones de educaci\u00f3n superior. Me refiero a la necesidad de <\/span><b>formar a los cient\u00edficos y cient\u00edficas en comunicaci\u00f3n divulgaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica y comunicaci\u00f3n en redes sociales de manera <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">que sepan conectar con p\u00fablicos diversos sin caer en el lenguaje t\u00e9cnico inaccesible. Y hacerlo con empat\u00eda y humildad: comunicar sin arrogancia, reconociendo las dudas y los l\u00edmites cuando sea necesario. En este grupo se ubican tambi\u00e9n aquellas actividades dirigidas a promocionar el <\/span><b>fomento de la participaci\u00f3n ciudadana en la ciencia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mediante el impulso de proyectos de ciencia ciudadana que involucren a la sociedad en la producci\u00f3n de conocimiento, fortaleciendo la confianza en el trabajo cient\u00edfico favoreciendo la transparencia en la producci\u00f3n de conocimiento. c\u00f3mo se generan los datos, qu\u00e9 conflictos de inter\u00e9s pueden existir y c\u00f3mo se toman decisiones cient\u00edficas.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Por \u00faltimo est\u00e1 la necesidad de <\/span><b>reforzar el v\u00ednculo entre ciencia y valores sociales.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Se trata aqu\u00ed de<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">establecer un di\u00e1logo entre ciencia, \u00e9tica, pol\u00edtica y sociedad y de promover la interdisciplinariedad en la formaci\u00f3n universitaria, integrando conocimientos cient\u00edficos, sociales y human\u00edsticos para abordar problemas complejos.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Este n\u00famero de HIP\u00d3TESIS 2.0 llega con la buena noticia de que la publicaci\u00f3n dispone de ISSN (3045-7017), lo que supone un paso importante en la consolidaci\u00f3n del proyecto.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Por otra parte, se presenta la segunda entrega de la serie iniciada en el n\u00famero anterior dedicada a presentar a la sociedad los trabajos y las l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n que se desarrollan en los institutos de investigaci\u00f3n de la Universidad de La Laguna. En este caso se trata del Instituto de Tecnolog\u00edas Biom\u00e9dicas (ITB).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Como nos se\u00f1ala el director del mismo, el profesor Diego \u00c1lvarez de la Rosa, el ITB que cuenta ya con diecinueve a\u00f1os de existencia, se ha consolidado como un centro de referencia en investigaci\u00f3n biom\u00e9dica, en el que se combina la investigaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica con la cl\u00ednica, realizada por grupos tanto de la ULL como de los Hospitales Universitarios de Canarias y de la Candelaria. Por su naturaleza las investigaciones adoptan un enfoque no s\u00f3lo multidisciplinar sino tambi\u00e9n de transferencia y sensibles por tanto, a las necesidades sanitarias de nuestro entorno, como a los retos que emergen desde la investigaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s b\u00e1sica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Con este n\u00famero continuamos dando respuesta a la responsabilidad que, como universidad, tenemos para con la sociedad canaria: dar a conocer lo que se investiga, por qu\u00e9 se investiga lo que se investiga, cu\u00e1nto cuesta y los resultados de estos esfuerzos. Con ello estamos contribuyendo a combatir el populismo cient\u00edfico. Y lo hacemos, no solo haciendo ciencia y defendi\u00e9ndola, sino innovando para cambiar la forma en que la ciencia se ense\u00f1a, se comunica y se construye junto con la sociedad.
