Hoy, en los pa\u00edses desarrollados, no solo vivimos m\u00e1s a\u00f1os (la esperanza de vida global supera los 73 a\u00f1os), sino que la meta es clara: no solo vivir m\u00e1s, sino vivir mejor, manteniendo la salud y el bienestar.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El envejecimiento es un proceso biol\u00f3gico que se define como la acumulaci\u00f3n progresiva de da\u00f1os moleculares y celulares que, con el tiempo, disminuyen la capacidad de nuestro organismo para funcionar correctamente. Es un camino inevitable que aumenta el riesgo de padecer enfermedades neurodegenerativas y c\u00e1ncer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">En esta carrera contra el tiempo, la clave est\u00e1 escondida en lo m\u00e1s profundo de nuestras c\u00e9lulas, en el material gen\u00e9tico. Los investigadores del Instituto Universitario de Enfermedades Tropicales y Salud P\u00fablica de Canarias (IUETSPC) de la Universidad de La Laguna est\u00e1n desvelando una de las piezas m\u00e1s importantes de este puzle: los tel\u00f3meros.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Imagine nuestros cromosomas, donde reside nuestro ADN, como los cordones de unos zapatos. Los tel\u00f3meros son los capuchones pl\u00e1sticos que protegen las puntas de esos cordones, evitando que se deshilachen. Son secuencias repetitivas de ADN que no codifican informaci\u00f3n, pero son esenciales.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El problema es que, cada vez que una c\u00e9lula se divide (un proceso que permite el crecimiento y la reparaci\u00f3n de tejidos), una peque\u00f1a porci\u00f3n de ese capuch\u00f3n se pierde. Con el tiempo, los tel\u00f3meros se acortan hasta un punto cr\u00edtico. Cuando ese acortamiento es excesivo, la c\u00e9lula deja de funcionar o muere, un fen\u00f3meno \u00edntimamente ligado al envejecimiento y a la aparici\u00f3n de enfermedades.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Este proceso puede acelerarse por factores externos, el llamado estr\u00e9s oxidativo. Una mala alimentaci\u00f3n, el tabaquismo, la contaminaci\u00f3n o el estr\u00e9s cr\u00f3nico generan unas sustancias nocivas conocidas como especies reactivas de ox\u00edgeno. Esto las convierte en modelos animales perfectos para entender los secretos de una vida larga. El proyecto de investigaci\u00f3n se centr\u00f3 en comparar los tel\u00f3meros de aves longevas con los de aquellas que tienen una esperanza de vida corta, buscando los biomarcadores (indicadores biol\u00f3gicos) que predicen la supervivencia.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los hallazgos fueron muy significativos:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Tel\u00f3meros m\u00e1s largos:<\/strong> Las aves con una alta esperanza de vida presentan tel\u00f3meros m\u00e1s largos y mantienen esta longitud mejor que las aves de vida corta.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Escudos antioxidantes:<\/strong> Las aves longevas tambi\u00e9n tienen una mayor concentraci\u00f3n de sustancias antioxidantes, que act\u00faan como defensas naturales contra el estr\u00e9s oxidativo y el da\u00f1o celular.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Coste de la reproducci\u00f3n:<\/strong> Se pudo comprobar que el esfuerzo reproductivo tiene un alto coste biol\u00f3gico, causando un aumento del estr\u00e9s oxidativo que, a su vez, provoca un mayor acortamiento de los tel\u00f3meros. Esto sugiere que las decisiones biol\u00f3gicas sobre la energ\u00eda que se dedica a la descendencia o a la supervivencia afectan directamente a la tasa de envejecimiento.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La investigaci\u00f3n, que dio lugar a publicaciones cient\u00edficas relevantes y a una tesis doctoral en la ULL, subraya la importancia de mantener la integridad de los tel\u00f3meros y de reforzar las defensas antioxidantes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El trabajo del IUETSPC, se basa en la evidencia rigurosa y en la apertura mental para encontrar modelos de estudio innovadores.
