Esta es la realidad de la queratitis por <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acanthamoeba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (QA), una infecci\u00f3n ocular rara, pero potencialmente devastadora, que puede conducir a la ceguera permanente.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La culpable es una ameba de vida libre, un organismo microsc\u00f3pico que habita en el agua dulce de casi cualquier lugar: grifos, piscinas, jacuzzis, incluso el agua embotellada y la soluci\u00f3n para lentes de contacto. La incidencia de esta enfermedad ha crecido de la mano con el aumento en el uso de lentes de contacto blandas, especialmente entre j\u00f3venes, convirtiendo un peque\u00f1o descuido en una grave amenaza para la visi\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Instituto Universitario de Enfermedades Tropicales y Salud P\u00fablica de Canarias (IUETSPC) de la Universidad de La Laguna, se ha especializado en el estudio de este par\u00e1sito, aportando conocimiento esencial para comprender c\u00f3mo esta ameba, que parece inofensiva en su medio natural, se convierte en un depredador ocular.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acanthamoeba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> es un enemigo formidable por su capacidad de transformarse. Su ciclo de vida consta de dos fases:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trofozo\u00edto: Es la forma activa y m\u00f3vil, la que se alimenta y se reproduce. Es tambi\u00e9n la forma infecciosa que ataca y destruye la c\u00f3rnea del ojo.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quiste: Cuando las condiciones ambientales son adversas (falta de alimento, deshidrataci\u00f3n o, crucialmente, la presencia de desinfectantes), el trofozo\u00edto se envuelve en una doble capa protectora extremadamente resistente. Este quiste puede sobrevivir durante a\u00f1os en las soluciones de limpieza o en los estuches de las lentes, resistiendo incluso a muchos desinfectantes comunes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El diagn\u00f3stico de la QA es complejo y a menudo se confunde con otras infecciones oculares, lo que retrasa el tratamiento. El retraso es fatal, ya que el tratamiento existente es t\u00f3xico, prolongado y, a menudo, ineficaz si la enfermedad est\u00e1 avanzada. Los principales factores de riesgo identificados por la investigaci\u00f3n son:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Higiene deficiente<\/strong>: No lavarse las manos correctamente antes de manipular las lentes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Exposici\u00f3n al agua:<\/strong> Usar las lentes mientras se ducha, se ba\u00f1a en la piscina o se est\u00e1 en un jacuzzi. Es un error cr\u00edtico que permite que el par\u00e1sito acceda al ojo.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Limpieza inadecuada<\/strong>: Reutilizar la soluci\u00f3n desinfectante o no reemplazar el estuche de las lentes con la frecuencia necesaria. El estuche puede convertirse en un reservorio o una \u00abguarida\u00bb donde las amebas forman biopel\u00edculas, protegi\u00e9ndose de los agentes limpiadores.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La baja prevalencia de la QA no disminuye su impacto. La enfermedad no solo puede llevar a la ceguera, sino que impone un dolor cr\u00f3nico y, a menudo, la necesidad de trasplantes de c\u00f3rnea que pueden fallar. Este coste humano, econ\u00f3mico y social subraya el rol del IUETSPC como centro de investigaci\u00f3n y de servicio a la sociedad.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Para el equipo de la Universidad de La Laguna, el camino a seguir es claro:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Investigaci\u00f3n en f\u00e1rmacos:<\/strong> Se necesita urgentemente desarrollar nuevos medicamentos que sean realmente efectivos y menos t\u00f3xicos para el ojo.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Innovaci\u00f3n en la desinfecci\u00f3n:<\/strong> Investigar nuevas soluciones desinfectantes y materiales para estuches de lentes que prevengan eficazmente la formaci\u00f3n de quistes y biopel\u00edculas.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Educaci\u00f3n y prevenci\u00f3n:<\/strong> La profilaxis es la mejor arma. Las instituciones sanitarias deben intensificar las campa\u00f1as informativas dirigidas a \u00f3pticas y usuarios sobre los riesgos y la higiene ocular fundamental.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La queratitis por <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acanthamoeba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> es un claro ejemplo de c\u00f3mo la ciencia, la medicina y la educaci\u00f3n p\u00fablica deben ir de la mano.
