En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, hemos sido testigos del auge de los pat\u00f3genos emergentes: microorganismos (virus, bacterias, hongos o par\u00e1sitos) que aparecen por primera vez en humanos o cuya capacidad de causar estragos ha aumentado dram\u00e1ticamente.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Estos nuevos desaf\u00edos se deben a una compleja mezcla de factores, desde mutaciones gen\u00e9ticas que hacen m\u00e1s resistentes a las bacterias hasta la alteraci\u00f3n de ecosistemas que facilita que un virus salte de un animal a una persona. La r\u00e1pida dispersi\u00f3n de pat\u00f3genos como el SARS-CoV-2, el \u00c9bola o el Zika ha demostrado que la vigilancia epidemiol\u00f3gica y la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica son la primera y mejor l\u00ednea de defensa.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Instituto Universitario de Enfermedades Tropicales y Salud P\u00fablica de Canarias (IUETSPC) de la Universidad de La Laguna, se ha consolidado como un centro clave en la lucha contra estas amenazas. A trav\u00e9s de su Laboratorio de Alertas Biol\u00f3gicas, el equipo se enfoca en el diagn\u00f3stico molecular de vanguardia para adelantarse a las pandemias y desentra\u00f1ar los secretos de los invasores microsc\u00f3picos.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La detecci\u00f3n temprana de un pat\u00f3geno es crucial, y el laboratorio del IUETSPC ha abrazado las t\u00e9cnicas moleculares m\u00e1s avanzadas para lograrlo. Estas t\u00e9cnicas permiten identificar la \u00abhuella dactilar\u00bb gen\u00e9tica de un microorganismo, ya sea un virus o una bacteria, con una precisi\u00f3n y rapidez inalcanzables para los m\u00e9todos tradicionales. Esta capacidad es fundamental para el diagn\u00f3stico de infecciones humanas y la vigilancia ambiental.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El equipo de la ULL aplica estos m\u00e9todos para estudiar diversos pat\u00f3genos. Un ejemplo claro es el seguimiento de bacterias multirresistentes, como <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Klebsiella pneumoniae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, que han desarrollado la capacidad de evadir la acci\u00f3n de los antibi\u00f3ticos. Tambi\u00e9n se investigan otros organismos resistentes, como el par\u00e1sito de la malaria (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plasmodium falciparum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), cuyo tratamiento se complica cada d\u00eda m\u00e1s.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La investigaci\u00f3n no se limita a la identificaci\u00f3n del pat\u00f3geno. Juegan un papel crucial en las infecciones: pueden ayudar al pat\u00f3geno a evadir la respuesta de nuestro sistema inmune, o bien, ayudar a la c\u00e9lula hospedadora a defenderse e inhibir la replicaci\u00f3n viral.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Estudios pioneros de nuestro grupo de investigaci\u00f3n han utilizado los miARN como biomarcadores de la enfermedad. Por ejemplo, en pacientes con COVID-19, se ha identificado un miARN (miR-27a-5p) que se encuentra en alta concentraci\u00f3n en los casos leves, lo que sugiere un posible efecto protector contra las formas m\u00e1s graves. De forma similar, la reducci\u00f3n de otro miARN (miR-1246) parece estar asociada con una defensa antiviral m\u00e1s eficaz.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Estos descubrimientos son mucho m\u00e1s que conocimiento te\u00f3rico. Al identificar las mol\u00e9culas (como los miARN) y las v\u00edas metab\u00f3licas que el SARS-CoV-2 utiliza para manipular a la c\u00e9lula, el IUETSPC est\u00e1 identificando posibles dianas terap\u00e9uticas.
