The initiative Girls with Science@ULL It is an educational and outreach project that aims to prevent gender violence by promoting scientific and technological vocations among students in the 3rd and 4th years of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) and the 1st year of Bachillerato (Upper Secondary Education) in schools in the Canary Islands, by highlighting the achievements and contributions of women in the field of research and technology, especially Canary Island researchers.
To this end, it offers a program of guidance activities designed to help improve students' academic performance and increase their interest in pursuing university studies to achieve better job prospects. These activities are conducted in person at participating schools and consist of informative talks highlighting the importance of women from the Canary Islands in science and technology, science workshops, and a project competition. Furthermore, they will be led by researchers from the University of La Laguna.
This project begins today, February 6, as a prelude to the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), at the IES Valle Guerra and IES Los Realejos schools, and will feature the participation of the following researchers: Dolores Serrano (tenured professor in the Department of Classical, French, Arabic and Romance Philology), Silvia Alonso (teacher and researcher in the Department of Industrial Engineering) and Teresa Acosta (tenured professor in the area of Genetics), who will give informative talks about their educational and scientific career in which the chapter they themselves star in will be shown. Dissemination Series Girls with Cienci@ULL. Also present will be doctoral students María González Falcón and Clara Isabel Díaz conducting scientific workshops on engineering and biology.
The participating schools in this edition, in addition to those mentioned above, will be: IES Ana Luisa Benítez and IES Francisco Hernández Monzón in Gran Canaria; IES Puerto del Rosario and IES Alcalá in Fuerteventura; IES San Sebastián in La Gomera; IES Garoé in El Hierro; Colegio Sagrada Familia de Nazaret in La Palma; and IES Costa Teguise and IES Agustín Espinoza in Lanzarote. A total of 644 students in the 3rd and 4th years of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) and the 1st year of Bachillerato (Upper Secondary Education) will benefit from this new edition of Chicas con Cienci@ULL (Girls with Science@ULL).
This initiative is promoted by the University of La Laguna, through its Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (Cienci@ULL) and the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands, with the collaboration of Cepsa Foundation, CajaSiete and the Association of Former Students and Friends of the University of La Laguna (AlumniULL).
And it is part of the post-activities program of MacaroNight (European Researchers' Night of Macaronesia). This project is an initiative promoted by La Palma Research Centre, the Sociedade Afonso Chaves - Associação de Estudos Açoreanos, the Science and Technology Park Foundation of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the University of Madeira, and the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna. It is co-financed by the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), an initiative to promote scientific careers in Europe, which is part of Horizon Europe, the European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The University of La Laguna and the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands have designed an awareness campaign to commemorate this international day within the framework of the Girls with Cienci@ULL initiative, which has been developed by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit, Cienci@ULL, since 2020, through a dissemination series and an educational project for schools in the Canary Islands.
To achieve this, we have collaborated with three senior researchers from this university who are clear role models for girls and young women in their fields of study and research. These researchers are: Verónica Pino University professor in the area of Analytical Chemistry, Matilde Arnay university professor in the area of Prehistory and Rosa María Aguilar University professor in the area of Systems Engineering and Automation.
This campaign uses three motivational phrases for young people, which have emerged from the message given by each scientist in her chapter of the Girls with Science@ULL Outreach Series: “There are no limits! You can be whatever you want to be” (Verónica Pino), “Science is everywhere. Discover it!” (Matilde Arnay) and “Did you know? Science and technology have no gender” (Rosa María Aguilar).
This campaign will take place from February 6 to 11, 2023 on the social networks of the ULL, Cienci@ULL and the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands.
