Fifteen recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds joined various departments of the University of La Laguna a year ago to gain their first work experience in public administration. This group was hired as interns thanks to a grant from the Canary Islands Employment Service and European funds, and next Wednesday, February 23, they will conclude their time at the academic institution, which for most has been their first contact with the working world.
For this reason, on Friday, February 17, the Rector's Office hosted an informal farewell ceremony in which the Rector, Rosa Aguilar, and the Manager, Juan Manuel Plasencia, thanked these young people for their dedication and interest shown during their time at the University of La Laguna. Also participating were the department heads and other staff members who served as mentors, as well as the program participants themselves, some of whom were visibly moved.
The group has developed their paid internships in different services of the institution: 20% in the Technical Office to work on everything related to sustainability, another similar percentage in digital skills, and the rest were assigned to general university activities such as Research, Human Resources, Intervention, Budget Office and Management.
During the farewell ceremony, those who participated in this first round of paid internships spoke very highly of the experience and the enrichment it provided for their personal and professional development. In fact, thanks to this training period, some have been able to explore specialties completely unrelated to their initial degree, such as computer programming.
The success of this first round of applications has encouraged the University of La Laguna to request a second, similar grant of approximately €500,000, which has already been awarded by the Canary Islands Employment Service. Therefore, the selection process is currently underway for the next fifteen graduates who will join the institution in March to gain firsthand experience of working in a public administration as large and diverse as the academic institution.
