Students from the University of La Laguna will undertake external internships in courts and tribunals in the Canary Islands

Monday March 20, 2023 - 08:43 CET

The Minister of Public Administration, Justice and Security, Julio Pérez, has signed an agreement with the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), through its acting president Rafael Mozo; the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop; and the Rector of the University of La Laguna, Rosa Aguilar, so that students from this higher education center can carry out external internships in courts and tribunals and, in this way, complement the knowledge acquired in the classroom.

According to the agreement, this initiative aims to provide university students with training that combines theory and practice, thereby boosting their employability as future professionals, fostering their entrepreneurial skills, creativity and innovation, and responding to the commitment to economic transformation based on the knowledge society.

The signatory institutions of the agreement wish to organize external internships in courts and tribunals, considering that this activity may be of great interest for the comprehensive training of professionals who in the future could collaborate or provide services to the Administration of Justice, which will result in a higher quality of it.

Specifically, the external internships—both curricular and extracurricular—in the courts and tribunals of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community are aimed at students enrolled in the External Internship course of official undergraduate or master's degree programs offered by the University of La Laguna, and always in fields related to the administration of justice. In the case of the Law degree, 163 students are currently enrolled in this course.

The Regional Ministry of Public Administration, Justice, and Security, within its remit, undertakes to facilitate these internships, as well as student access to court and tribunal facilities. The University of La Laguna, through the person in charge of the External Internship course, will be responsible for proposing the students who will undertake them. These students must maintain secrecy and confidentiality regarding any resources, processes, or judicial or administrative proceedings they may become aware of during their internship, even after its completion.

Once the established internship period is completed, participants will receive a certificate issued by the court or tribunal, stating the hours worked, the nature of the activities carried out, and the level achieved as determined by the supervisor(s). However, the internship will not be considered a merit for access to public service, nor can it be counted towards seniority or recognition of services rendered within any public administration.

This agreement does not entail any financial obligations or economic compensation for either party. For its proper monitoring, coordination, control, and interpretation, a commission has been established, comprised of two members from each of the signatory institutions, which will meet at least once a year.

The agreement stipulates that the University of La Laguna undertakes, according to its availability, to provide its collaboration to the Ministry of Justice and the CGPJ by providing classrooms, on the occasion of holding tests corresponding to the selection processes for the entry or access of civil servants to the service of the Administration of Justice and access to the judicial and prosecutorial careers.
