The University of La Laguna (ULL) participates in International Composting Awareness Week with an informative event

Friday May 12, 2023 - 10:27 CEST

The University of La Laguna, as it had already done in 2022, has joined the Week International Compost Awareness Day 2023 organized by Compost Foundation Between May 7 and 13, educational centers and local and regional entities in different countries will hold awareness-raising activities about this method of reusing organic waste, under the common slogan "For healthy soils and healthier food... Compost!".

Specifically, the University of La Laguna, through its CAMPUSTAJE-ULL initiative, will organize an outreach activity for students, teaching and research staff, and administrative and service staff. This activity will take place today, Friday, May 12, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the composting area of the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism (located in the rear parking lot next to the cafeteria of the lecture hall building). During this workshop, participants will contribute organic matter, transfer it between composters, and distribute the resulting compost.

Following the composting of 7,000 kilos of organic waste on-site at the University of La Laguna during the 2021/22 academic year, which, thanks to this initiative, did not end up in the landfill, the goal for the current 2022/23 academic year is to reach 10 tons, consolidating this practice as part of the university's policy. The participation of the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism already accounts for approximately 25.1% of the total organic matter recovered this year.

The campuses of the University of La Laguna can be repurposed as carbon sinks, biodiversity reservoirs, and reverse mining sites, where waste is transformed into valuable resources through natural biotechnological processes. The resulting compost is reinvested within the campus itself and among the participating university community.

Additionally, composting areas foster service-learning opportunities in practical circular economy practices, as well as demonstration and networking activities on campus, teaching projects, undergraduate and master's theses, knowledge transfer, and transdisciplinary research. Furthermore, they allow for a deeper understanding of campus metabolism, enabling accurate diagnoses, opportunities for innovation, and continuous improvement that ultimately leads to institutional enhancement.
