This July, the IX European Congress of Protistology, This meeting, held jointly with the annual Congress of the International Society of Protistologists, is organized by the University of Vienna in conjunction with the German Society for Parasitology. At this scientific gathering, the tropical diseases research team from the University of La Laguna once again demonstrated its leadership, in a meeting that featured over 4,000 presentations from researchers across all continents.

Jacob Lorenzo Morales, director of the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health of the Canary Islands, Along with several members of the laboratories specializing in free-living amoebae, health alerts, antiparasitic therapy, and biomarkers for disease diagnosis and progression, the latest advances in protozoan biology, diagnosis, and treatment have been presented, as well as their role in aspects such as biodiversity, soil fertility, and markers of climate change effects, among others.

With the participation of top-ranked European, Asian, and American research centers and universities, the La Laguna team has seen its work in this field recognized with the second prize for best oral communication, awarded to the predoctoral researcher Íñigo Arberas-Jiménez for her communication “Palythoa af. clavata as a source of bioactive compounds against the brain eating amoeba” (Palythoa af.
