The ULL hosts the winter seminar of the National High-Performance Computing Network

Tuesday 30 de January de 2024 - 09:35 CET

The Higher School of Engineering and Technology of the University of La Laguna will host, between Wednesday, January 31st and Friday, February 2nd, the fourteenth edition of the seminar organized annually by the High Performance Computing Network on Heterogeneous Parallel Architectures (CAPAP-H), and which will also serve to bring together researchers from another network focused, in this case, on the RISCV architecture, fundamental for the development of microchips.

The central theme of this seminar will be quantum computing, a technology that will shape the future of supercomputing. It accelerates the calculation of certain algorithms because the devices that employ it operate differently from previous computing methods, relying on specific properties of quantum physics. It is a very nascent field of research, but one that is generating significant progress. However, building equipment based on this technology is currently very expensive because it is still experimental.

The Vice-Rector for Digital Transformation at the University of La Laguna, Vicente Blanco, He explains that hosting this meeting for the first time in the seminars' history is very important for the Canary Islands academic institution. Around 80 people affiliated with the two participating research networks have confirmed their attendance, and more than 120 are expected to participate in activities open to a wider audience, such as the workshops, which may also attract students and faculty from the institution.

Thus, this edition will feature a workshop on Artificial Intelligence, invited talks on various subjects, and sessions of groups related to the topic of Quantum Computing, as well as an additional session for members of the network on RISCV architecture.

It is noteworthy that this winter seminar will also serve as a forum to bring together for the first time a series of research chairs recently created around the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation on Microelectronics and Semiconductors, popularly known as PERTE Chip, which is the initiative of the Government of Spain to promote the national development of chips.

Regarding this state initiative, on Thursday, February 1st at 10:35 a.m., Pedro Martín Jurado, Special Commissioner for the Microelectronics and Semiconductors Project of PERTE Chip, will speak about the present and future of this program. Another noteworthy presentation that same day at 11:25 a.m. will be given by Carmina Almudever, a distinguished researcher at the Beatriz de Galindo Institute affiliated with the University of Valencia, who will offer a systemic view of quantum computing.

CAPAP-H Network

The CAPAP-H network was created in 2010 as a proposal funded in the Research Networks call of the then Ministry of Science and Innovation, with the aim of facilitating the exchange and transfer of knowledge in the area of high-performance computing in heterogeneous systems.

In subsequent years, the network was funded through successive calls for Research Networks and "Networks of Excellence" initiatives, with changes in the group of representatives from the different participating research groups.

The network organizes recurring activities to foster information exchange and strengthen synergies among its member groups, such as workshops, courses, and these winter seminars. By 2020, the network had reached a high degree of maturity and independence, and it ceased receiving funding from the Ministry and is now part of the Spanish Society of Computer Architecture and Technology (SARTECO). Currently, this organization comprises 32 entities of various types affiliated with Spanish universities and research centers.
