The University of La Laguna and the Granadilla de Abona City Council have launched the 'Scientific Vocations' project, aimed at young people in the municipality and designed to foster scientific and technological talent among this segment of the local population. First Deputy Mayor Óscar Delgado and Councilor for Youth Celia Trujillo recently met with the Rector of the academic institution, Francisco Javier García Rodríguez, at the City Hall. Also present were other representatives from the municipal corporation and the university, including the Vice-Rector for Culture and University Extension, Isabel Karely León Pérez; the Manager of the ULL General Foundation, Julio Antonio Brito; and the coordinator of Cienc@Ull, Laura García, among others.
The program of activities, which is planned to run for a year, represents an investment of €28,000 and includes two school competitions: one for science projects in secondary schools and another about 'My Favorite Canarian Scientist'. It also includes the initiative 'Science for everyone’', which will publicize actions outside of schools, and the II Science, Art and Technology Exhibition of Granadilla de Abona (MUCAT), after the success of the last edition in San Isidro.
Óscar Delgado thanked the Rector of the University of La Laguna for his willingness and collaboration with the city council, which already has other agreements with the institution through other municipal departments such as Education, Local Development Agency (AEDL), and Citizen Participation. For her part, Celia Trujillo emphasized the success of the first edition of MUCAT and stressed the commitment of this governing team to continue working closely and collaboratively with the academic center, for which a working meeting has been scheduled for the coming months.
Regarding agreements with the university and other city council departments, it's worth mentioning the imminent signing of an agreement to establish a skills and well-being school, which, under the name 'Casa de Colores' (House of Colors), will bring the University closer to students, families, professionals, and the general public. University extension courses are also being offered on topics such as water in the Canary Islands and its efficient use in agriculture, the digital world, sustainable development, waste management, and the circular economy in the Canary Islands. In the area of citizen participation, an agreement has already been reached with the Tenerife Island Council and the FGULL (University of La Laguna Foundation) to promote a strategic framework for intercultural coexistence called 'Tenerife Lives Diversity'.
