The text includes how the concept of thermophilic forests emerged throughout the history of research in Macaronesia, the history of the Mediterranean climate and biome, the origin and distribution of the main thermophilic communities and the tree and shrub species that comprise them, as well as a review of the most important human impacts and existing conservation strategies.
