Tuesday 22 de October de 2024 - 12:25 CEST

The Honnor-Calzadilla Foundation recently presented credentials to the six master's and doctoral students from the University of La Laguna who have benefited from the scholarships that the entity offers annually to postgraduate students linked to the Faculty of Education and the sections of Philosophy, Philology and Geography and History of the Faculty of Humanities.

The event, held at the Rectorate, was presided over by the rector, Francisco García, and was attended by the vice-rector for Students, Rosario Hernández Borges, and the president and vice-president of the organizing foundation, Luis González León and Carlos Bencomo Mendoza, respectively.

In total, three scholarships for official master's degrees have been awarded, amounting to €677 and €655, and three more for doctoral studies, valued at €203 each, intended to cover the cost of tuition fees for these programs. In total, €2,619 has been distributed proportionally among the recipients, according to the criteria established in the call for applications.

Master's students who have received scholarships will study the degrees corresponding to Art History and Cultural Management and to Teacher Training for Secondary and Baccalaureate Education, while doctoral students are assigned to the specializations in Linguistic Studies and Hispanic Philology of the program in Arts and Humanities.

The rector thanked the Honnor-Calzadilla Foundation for its continued commitment to the educational institution and expressed his hope that this collaboration, now in its seventh year, will continue. García noted that this seemingly small financial support can be significant for those who receive it, and in this regard, he referred to the economist Schumacher, who emphasized this idea in his essay "Small Is Beautiful.".

For his part, Carlos Bencomo Mendoza delivered a brief speech that alternated between expressing gratitude and congratulations for the trust placed in his institution, as well as for the flawless organization of the event, and congratulated the scholarship recipients on achieving their goal. He noted that the financial contribution made was “prudent” because the foundation's aim is to extend the scholarship programs for as long as possible, although they will explore ways to make better use of these funds.

The Vice-Rector for Students, Rosario Hernández, congratulated the students for their work, thanks to which they have obtained the scholarship, and thanked the foundation for maintaining this collaboration that began seven years ago.

Rafael George Lewis Honnor-Calzadilla, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1935 and deceased in London in 2008, is the patron for whom the foundation is named. Having settled in England, he amassed a considerable fortune, part of which he dedicated to charitable endeavors, in this case to supporting students in the humanities and education. Of Canarian mother and British father, he was educated at the prestigious King's College London, where he earned a degree in Language and Literature and became fluent in eight languages.

She maintained contact with her aunts in the Canary Islands, from whom she inherited a generous legacy. When the time came, having no children, she stipulated in her will that all her assets would be used for charitable purposes. Thus, a scholarship was established for the British school where she had been educated, and her Spanish assets fund these scholarships, administered through the foundation that bears her name, created in 2014, six years after her death.

Another social organization that has recently collaborated with the University of La Laguna to provide student support is the Rotary Club of Tenerife South. They offered a grant to cover accommodation expenses for students enrolled at the university who come from municipalities in the south of the island. Rocío Suárez, a student, has received this grant of 246 euros per month for the academic year to help pay for her university residence.
