The Governing Council of the University of La Laguna held an extraordinary session today, January 13, to approve 10 positions in the María Goyri Assistant Professor program, which will strengthen the university's efforts to attract talent. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has already awarded this academic institution a total of 63 positions within this program.
The Vice-Rector for Teaching and Research Staff, Alfonso Ruiz, reported to the governing body that the agreement in the Canary Islands, signed between the regional government and the Ministry, was signed in November, and to date, the regional government has not issued a report on it. He explained that the 53 positions already approved in July are six months behind schedule at the Ministry of Universities, in addition to 47 associate teaching positions and another 49 positions from the 2023 Public Employment Offer, which are experiencing delays of between three and six months.
A total of 149 teaching positions are affected and are awaiting the corresponding reports from the regional executive, whose delays are affecting the planned processing of this beginning of the school year, which will exceed 300 positions.
The Vice-Rector for Teaching and Research Staff noted that this scenario of delays in authorizing the calls for applications was unprecedented, and that resolving this problem in the approval process would entail a significant amount of work within the university to ensure the positions were filled. However, according to recent discussions with the Regional Ministry of Universities, the publication of these positions appears imminent.
The rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, added that the "unjustifiable delays" of the regional government must be corrected, as they place the university in a "very complex situation," apart from the fact that the university itself needs to be more agile internally, aspects on which it has worked and will continue to work.
