Professor of Physical Chemistry Elena Pastor strengthens her scientific collaboration with Chilean universities

Tuesday January 21, 2025 - 09:17 CET

The professor of Physical Chemistry Elena Pastor Tejera has given a plenary presentation at the II Symposium on Green Ammonia and Power-to-X Systems in Latin America which was held on January 8, 9 and 10, 2025 at the UC Anacleto Angelini Innovation Center, located on the San Joaquín Campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago, Chile.

These international symposia aim to promote the latest advances in research and technological development for the sustainable production of ammonia, hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and other energy carriers. They have thus become key forums for fostering a sustainable future in Latin America and the world.

In this second edition, the event featured plenary lectures, oral presentations, a poster session and a day dedicated to industry, addressing key issues such as innovation, safety, public policies and ammonia projects in Chile, and was broadcast online by the YouTube channel of the MIGA institute (Millennium Institute on Green Ammonia), the organizer of the congress.

The lecture given by Professor Elena Pastor was entitled “Materials for the electrochemical production of hydrogen”, in which the researcher showed the latest results achieved by the Surface Science and Electrocatalysis (CISEL) research group of the University of La Laguna in the development of low cost and efficient materials, free of noble metals, for use in electrolyzers.

Taking advantage of this participation in the congress, the researcher from the University of La Lagunas stayed on January 13, 14 and 15 at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Santiago de Chile, in the laboratory of Conducting Polymers and Electroanalytical Sensors, at the invitation of the researcher María Jesús Aguirre Quintana.

This research group has maintained a collaborative relationship for over 20 years, evidenced by various joint projects and publications. During this visit, a workshop on Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS) was held on January 13th, with the participation of faculty and students from the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Santiago and students from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

On the 14th, she gave a keynote lecture entitled “Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry: Some Application Examples,” with the participation of students and researchers from various universities in Santiago, Chile. The professor from the University of La Laguna is an expert in this technique, which has shown great potential for application in research aimed at promoting the use of green ammonia as an energy carrier.
