Within the framework of the collaborative and cooperative work that the two public universities of the Canary Islands have been developing, their management teams have recently met in La Laguna to establish synergies and areas of cooperation in strategic matters such as public procurement, coordination in digital transformation, simplification of administrative processes or budgets.
The University of La Laguna (ULL) manager, María Teresa Covisa, and her counterpart at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Jorge Balaguer, were accompanied by several deputy managers and heads of departments, with the aim of fostering a system of cross-departmental cooperation and jointly addressing common challenges. This meeting resulted in the creation of four permanent working groups focused on human resources, budgets, public procurement, and digital administration and simplification. Their purpose is to share best practices, identify common needs, and plan developments tailored to the two higher education institutions.
One of them could be the implementation of dynamic procurement systems, which would improve the efficiency of tenders, save costs and time, and provide common services, if applicable.
The meeting also aimed to address multi-year funding strategies, which would require a joint position, as well as to establish a new strategy for data management and digital administration itself. Simplifying subsidies, unifying procedures, introducing artificial intelligence into many processes, and launching joint calls for talent recruitment were among the other topics discussed.
Furthermore, the human resources working group aims to establish a common framework for streamlining the hiring process. The two managers maintained that this meeting has revealed new areas for collaboration and greater coordination, demonstrating the value of this initiative, which is scheduled to be repeated monthly for each working group.
