The Technical Architecture Section of the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering received a visit from 4th year ESO students from the Pureza de María de la Cuesta School and 4th year ESO and 2nd year Baccalaureate students from the IES los Realejos to learn about the work carried out at the University of La Laguna through a day organized in coordination with the Department of Engineering and Architecture Techniques and Projects.
The students had the opportunity to work in the Chemistry and Materials Laboratory on various topics, including destructive testing, hardened concrete, and steel bars. They performed quality control tests on concrete specimens and tests on steel bars in reinforced concrete. They also explored non-destructive testing in the construction sector, such as determining the rebound index to estimate the strength of hardened concrete in service, and the practical application of infrared thermography as a non-destructive technique for detecting water leaks in installations.
Likewise, in the Department's Computer Lab, with the activity "Virtual Pre-construction", students were able to experiment with building and infrastructure models, exploring the possibilities of making modifications to virtual construction models (Virtual Design and Construction) to improve processes in the sector, not only at the level of 3D visualization and error detection, but also to produce an off-site tool that serves to industrialize construction.
The day was completed with activities held at the Carpentry Workshop Laboratory and Cultural Classroom of Traditional and Heritage Carpentry at the University of La Laguna, including a description of the traditional and heritage carpentry trade and carpentry machinery. In addition, the groups were able to observe different scale prototypes of workshop carpentry elements and assembly techniques used in traditional carpentry in the Canary Islands.
