The city of Palma de Mallorca hosted the national final of the 12th Spanish Philosophy Olympiad this past weekend, in which the finalists from the regional olympiads competed. The five finalists from the Canary Islands participated (two in essay writing and one each in moral dilemmas, photography, and philosophical video). Three of them won in their respective categories: Mario Rodríguez Bonnet, from the French International Lycée of Tenerife, won in the essay category; Alba Cabrera Pérez, from the Villalba Hervás Secondary School in Tenerife, won in the photography category; and Jia Ye Jiang Zhen, from the Tías Secondary School in Lanzarote, took third place in the moral dilemma category.

The Philosophy Olympiad consists of two phases: in the first, teachers work with their students in schools and select the best exercises; the second phase is the regional final of the 12th Canary Islands Philosophy Olympiad, which was held on February 21st at the University of La Laguna. The students who won this regional final went on to participate in the Spanish Philosophy Olympiad.

From the Canary Islands, two representatives participated in Dissertation (Mario Rodríguez Bonnet, from the French International Lyceum of Tenerife, and Martha López Pérez, from the IES Joaquín Artiles), one representative in Dilemma (Jia Ye Jiang Zheng, from the IES Tías), one representative in photography (Alba Cabrera Pérez, from the IES Villalba Hervás) and one representative in video (Petra Romero García, from the IES Agustín Espinosa).

The Canary Islands Philosophy Olympiad is organized by the Canary Islands Philosophy Olympiad Association in collaboration with the Philosophy Department of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of La Laguna and the Canary Islands Government's Department of Education. It is aimed at high school students and those in the third and fourth years of secondary school (ESO), with the objective of fostering reflection and critical thinking among secondary school students. This year's theme was "Care: Care for People, Care for the Environment, Care for Oneself.".

In the regional phase, 58 schools from 5 islands (La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura) registered. In the essay category, 29 schools from 5 islands submitted a total of 50 essays. In the dilemma category, 11 schools from 4 islands submitted a total of 18 dilemmas. Ten videos from 7 schools were accepted into the video competition. And in the photography category, 57 photographs from 19 schools across 4 islands were accepted.
