The ULL's popular science magazine, Hipótesis, launches a new issue dedicated to Biomedicine

Thursday 08 de May de 2025 - 07:55 CEST

The eighteenth issue of the popular science magazine of the University of La Laguna Hypothesis It is now available on their website. This new edition is the second installment in the series dedicated to presenting to the public the work and lines of research being developed in the research institutes of the academic center. In this case, it is about the Institute of Biomedical Technologies (ITB).

As its director, Professor Diego Álvarez de la Rosa, points out, the ITB, now nineteen years old, has established itself as a leading center for biomedical research, combining basic and clinical research conducted by groups from both the University of La Laguna and the university hospitals of the Canary Islands. By its very nature, the research adopts a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on knowledge transfer and thus remaining sensitive to the healthcare needs of the surrounding area, as well as to the challenges that emerge from basic research.

“With this issue, we continue to fulfill our responsibility as a university to the people of the Canary Islands: to publicize our research, the reasons behind it, its costs, and the results of these efforts,“ says Nestor Torres, director of Hipótesis. ”In doing so, we are contributing to combating scientific populism. And we are doing this not only by conducting and defending science, but also by innovating to change the way science is taught, communicated, and built together with society.”.

This new issue features articles dedicated to brain synapses, neurodegenerative diseases, the microbiota, stress, Fragile X syndrome, personalized medicine, genetics, phosphorus and its connection to the kidneys, genome sequencing, and ALS. In addition to this special feature on the ITB, we also find a new article in the critical thinking section, “In Ockham’s Garden,” and content on urban anolides, meteorites that fell in the Canary Islands, the history of alchemy, and the history of some of the most famous power outages.

As with previous issues, the new articles are available on the website of the magazine and on its social media networks: X, Blue Sky, Facebook, and Instagram. The journal Hipótesis is an initiative of the academic institution through its Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (Cienci@ULL)
