The Government of the Canary Islands receives in physical format the catalogue of Francoist vestiges prepared by a team from the ULL

Wednesday 21 de May de 2025 - 13:43 CEST

The team of historians from the University of La Laguna, who compiled the catalogue of Francoist symbols, monuments, and references in the Canary Islands, delivered the eleven printed and bound volumes of the third phase of their work to the Government of the Canary Islands today, May 21. This third phase focuses on the archipelago's non-capital municipalities. The Deputy Minister of Culture and Cultural Heritage of the regional government, Horacio Umpiérrez, attended the reception, which was presided over by the Rector, Francisco García.

The rector congratulated the research team responsible for this meticulous and laborious work entrusted to the university for having delivered on time and in the proper form a catalog referring to a subject as sensitive as historical memory, and it serves as an example of the work that academia can do to serve society.

The deputy minister explained that the documentation will be examined by the technical staff of his department in order to, once verified, arrange the means to make it available to the Technical Commission of Historical Memory, which is responsible for adopting the necessary measures in this matter, based on existing information, such as that contained in this catalog.

Also present at the event held in the Rectorate was the head of the team, the professor of Art History Isabel Navarro Segura, and some of its members: the tenured professor Jesús Pérez Morera, the researcher Kumar Kishinchand López and the professor from the Department of Art History and Philosophy Yolanda Peralta Sierra. Yanira Hermida Martín and Ricardo Guerra Palmero also participated in the project.

What has been delivered today is the printed version of the catalogue, more than 9,300 pages that had already been deposited in the registry in digital format on March 31 of this year, scrupulously meeting the deadlines of the commission issued by the Government of the Canary Islands. The printed version took somewhat longer due to the technical difficulty of faithfully reproducing all the documentation contained within its pages. Finally, two sets of eleven copies have been printed and bound, one to be kept by the regional government and the other by the University of La Laguna.

This is the third phase of a project to catalog Francoist vestiges that began in 2018, the first phase of which, corresponding to the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was delivered in July 2019, and the second, five volumes on the capital municipalities, in July 2023.

This third phase of the catalog accounts for the Francoist elements found on the eight islands, and which to date correspond to a total of 428 registered elements, of which 225 correspond to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 203 to Las Palmas.
