The University of La Laguna reinforces its support for Palestine with an exhibition and a solidarity concert

Monday September 22, 2025 - 12:54 CEST

The University of La Laguna, consistent with its commitment to human rights and the promotion of peace, has organized two events this week in support of the Palestinian population.

Firstly, on Wednesday, September 24th at 10:00 a.m., an exhibition entitled 'Palestine: memory, resistance and genocide' will be inaugurated in the Central Building of the academic institution, organized by Puente Humano, a non-profit association, made up of teachers and families and committed to rights from the educational framework.

Through images, the university community and society at large are invited to confront the genocide in Palestine and reaffirm the importance of justice, commitment, and international solidarity. The exhibition will be open until September 30th.

That same day, starting at 7:30 p.m., the Paraninfo of the University of La Laguna will host a benefit concert for the Palestinian Association of the Askar refugee camp in the West Bank, with the aim of raising funds for the region. Tickets can be purchased at Eco-tickets starting from 10 euros.

Through music, storytelling, and dance, the work of the Askar Association in Palestine and the Palestinian Community Association in the Canary Islands will be showcased. Furthermore, the event aims to highlight the unbearable situation faced by the Palestinian population under this armed siege, while simultaneously strengthening cultural and humanitarian cooperation ties from the Canary Islands.

The event will feature Amjad Al-Rifaie, head of the Palestinian Association of Askar and a leading figure in the defense of Palestinian rights. His remarks during the evening will provide a firsthand account of the reality faced by the more than 18,000 residents of this refugee camp, who in recent years have suffered an increasing number of incursions by the Israeli Occupation Forces.

Rifaie, who spent five years as a political prisoner in Israeli jails, has played a key role in strengthening international solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Through community initiatives and cultural exchange programs, he has successfully engaged institutions and organizations from various countries in projects supporting the refugee population.

Their participation in this charity concert represents an opportunity to learn firsthand about the urgent needs of the Askar camp and the importance of international cooperation.

The Sax Pack Big Band will perform their show 'Soul Hits,' and storytellers Juan Carlos Tacoronte and Antonio Conejo will also participate. Directed by Fran Rodríguez, this band consists exclusively of saxophones and is made up of his students and jazz-loving musicians.

Anyone wishing to contribute financially but unable to attend the concert can make a donation to the "Row 0" option. All proceeds from the concert will go directly to the Palestinian Association of Askar, which develops social, educational, and cultural projects for the benefit of the refugee population. These resources are essential for sustaining programs that support children, vulnerable families, and promote community activities that help them cope with the hardships caused by occupation and forced displacement.

The Askar refugee camp, located in the Nablus region of the West Bank, is home to more than 18,000 people who, generation after generation, have had to survive in extremely difficult conditions. The Palestinian Association plays a vital role there in ensuring basic services, maintaining educational spaces, and strengthening the cultural identity of its population.
