La revista DyLE publica dos artículos de profesionales de la ULL sobre acceso a la universidad y orientación académica

Wednesday 18 de February de 2026 - 10:58 CET

The digital magazine Dirección y Liderazgo Educativo (DyLE) has included in its number 28 Two contributions signed by professionals from the University of La Laguna. Specifically, an article entitled “What is the University Entrance Exam for?”, signed by the director of the Secretariat for Access and Diversity of the institution, Antonio Adelfo Delgado Núñez; and another entitled “The Ambassadors Program of the University of La Laguna. A university orientation strategy”, whose authors are Rocío Medina López and Rosalía del Carmen Mendoza Hernández, legal and educational advisors, respectively, of the Information and Guidance Service (SIO).

Following the editorial, the issue opens with an article by Delgado Núñez in the “Open Forum” section, in which the author traces the evolution of the university entrance exam, from the old Selectividad to the current PAU. In his opinion, this exam represents “a necessary filter to give effect to the principle of equality,” since it essentially consists of “ranking students according to their grades” within a single admissions district. “The real difficulty lies in achieving a fairer Selectividad, which requires greater uniformity between districts.”.

After presenting these arguments that justify its existence and validity within the university system, Delgado Núñez concludes with an analysis of the process of harmonizing the exam among the different autonomous communities, promoted by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE). The expert points out that the idea that some communities have easier exams than others is “an urban legend,” and explains that creating a single exam for all of Spain “clashes with the distribution of powers established by the Constitution and the statutes of autonomy.”.

Therefore, the expert concludes that, while a statewide entrance exam that is homogeneous remains impossible under the current constitutional framework, "a more equitable and coherent university entrance exam is not only desirable, but achievable" if a "shared commitment" is reached by all the districts involved.

Ambassadors program

The second contribution from the University of La Laguna, signed by SIO advisors Rocío Medina and Rosalía Mendoza, is part of the “Experiences” section and analyzes in depth the fundamental objective of the Ambassadors program of the academic institution: to strengthen links between secondary education and the university and facilitate decision-making by 4th year ESO and 1st year Baccalaureate students regarding their access to higher education, through direct advice offered by students already at the university who act as “ambassadors” of the academic center.

The article explains the conception of this project, developed by the Vice-Rectorate for Students with financial support from the CajaCanarias Foundation, as well as its organization and development during 2024. It involved four university professors and eleven students who interacted with five secondary school teachers and nearly 150 secondary school students. The feedback was positive, and the results allowed for refinement of the subsequent edition, which focused on two parallel areas: undergraduate degrees with low enrollment and STEM degrees with low female representation.
