Thursday 16 de July de 2026 - 10:37 CEST

Fuerteventura in the spotlight This initiative, promoted by the Fuerteventura Island Council and the University of La Laguna through its General Foundation, in collaboration with the island's municipalities, aims to create a collaborative network among the island's public administrations with a focus on strengthening citizen participation. On July 14th, a working meeting was held in Puerto del Rosario to launch a new phase of the project, designed to consolidate a working method based on collaboration and ongoing support.

This meeting was attended by Víctor Alonso Falcón, Councilor for Citizen Participation of the Fuerteventura Island Council; Pedro Rodríguez, Councilor for Citizen Participation of the Tuineje City Council; Nuria Moaré Crespón, Councilor for Citizen Participation of the Pájara City Council; Victoria Cerdeña González, Councilor for Citizen Participation of the Antigua City Council; and Jenifer Pérez, Councilor for Citizen Participation of the Puerto del Rosario City Council. Representing the University of La Laguna and its Foundation were Vicente Zapata Hernández, Academic Director; Alexis Mesa Marrero, Technical Coordinator; and technicians María Candelaria Siverio Grillo and Carolina Medina Mañas.

The town councils of La Oliva and Betancuria were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, a circumstance that does not alter their involvement in the process or their shared commitment to continue moving forward together with the other administrations.

Within this new phase, the revitalization of the Fuerteventura Island Council's Citizen Participation Regulations was proposed as a tool to strengthen a stable and shared culture of participation on the island. At the same time, the development of Community Hubs was furthered. These are flexible spaces for interaction between government bodies, technical resources, citizens, and community organizations, designed to foster mutual understanding, build trust, and implement initiatives tailored to the specific needs of each municipality.

In addition to all of the above, the project will continue to offer technical support to municipalities and associations with the aim of strengthening their capacities to promote and sustain citizen participation processes with a community focus.

Alongside these lines of action, Fuerteventura Protagonista maintains a series of cross-cutting themes that are essential for consolidating sustained community participation. The training and capacity building of public officials, technical staff, organizations, and citizens will continue to be a tool for strengthening shared knowledge among the various stakeholders.

Similarly, the continuation of the Community Volunteering Network will continue to foster the creation of collaborative links between individuals, groups, and institutions, giving increasing value to citizen involvement as a resource to strengthen community life on the island.

This meeting represents a further step in a process aimed at strengthening relations between the public administrations of Fuerteventura as a foundation for advancing towards more robust and sustainable citizen participation. The next working meeting has been scheduled for the second half of September in the municipality of Tuineje, organized by its town council, to finalize the Community Hubs and complete the training catalog planned until the end of 2026. Following this, meetings will continue to be held in different towns across the island, with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the wide diversity of socio-territorial realities.
