The University of La Laguna has successfully concluded its participation in the Erasmus+ KA171 project corresponding to the 2023 call, developed within the framework of the LiderAfrica consortium, an international cooperation initiative coordinated to strengthen academic and scientific relations between Spanish and African universities through the mobility of students, teaching and research staff and technical, management and administration staff.
The LiderAfrica consortium is made up of the Spanish universities of Cádiz, Huelva, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, with the collaboration of Casa África as a strategic partner to promote institutional relations between both continents.
During the execution of the project, the University of La Laguna has collaborated with various African higher education institutions, including the University of Cape Verde, the Technical University of the Atlantic, the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde, the Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (Senegal), the University of The Gambia, the Alassane Ouattara University (Ivory Coast), the University of Nouakchott (Mauritania) and the Namibia University of Science and Technology.
One of the main achievements has been the hosting of 18 African students at the University of La Laguna for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral academic stays. These exchanges have facilitated training and research activities in diverse fields such as agricultural engineering, architectural engineering, education, humanities, sciences, social sciences, communication, economics, business, tourism, and cultural heritage management.
The origin of these students reflects the regional dimension of the project, with participants from Cape Verde, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Namibia, Gambia and Mauritania, contributing to the internationalization of the campuses of the University of La Laguna and promoting the exchange of knowledge, experiences and good practices between academic communities of both continents.
In addition to individual mobility programs, the project has fostered opportunities for interaction among participating institutions through various joint activities. These include the Staff Week held at the University of Cádiz in 2024, which brought together representatives from the consortium's European and African universities to exchange experiences on managing international mobility and explore new collaboration opportunities, and the Staff Week organized in Zanzibar (Tanzania) in 2026, which focused on strengthening institutional capacities, cooperation with African universities, and the development of joint projects within the Erasmus+ program.
These activities have allowed the consolidation of a stable network of cooperation between the participating institutions, promoting the exchange of good practices in internationalization, the design of future cooperation initiatives and the identification of new opportunities for academic and scientific collaboration.
The participation of the University of La Laguna in LiderAfrica is part of its institutional strategy for internationalization and its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, especially through the strengthening of international partnerships, the promotion of inclusive and quality higher education and the promotion of collaborative research as a tool to address shared global challenges.
With the completion of the KA171 2023 project, the University of La Laguna consolidates its position as a leading partner in university cooperation between Europe and Africa and reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting initiatives that contribute to the creation of a common space for higher education based on collaboration, mobility and knowledge exchange.
