Monday 07 de September de 2026 - 08:11 CEST

Representatives of the Social Councils of the University of La Laguna and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria attended the inauguration of Sergio Melián Batista as the new president of the Economic and Social Council of the Canary Islands (CES), held at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Attending the event provides an opportunity to further strengthen institutional cooperation between the Social Councils of the Canary Islands public universities and the CES, reinforcing the presence of the universities, through their Social Councils, in spaces for dialogue on the present and future economic and social issues in the Canary Islands.

The event, presided over by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, brought together institutional representatives and representatives of the archipelago's main economic and social stakeholders. Melián, representative of the Workers' Commissions (CCOO) on the Economic and Social Council (CES), succeeds José Carlos Francisco and assumes the presidency of this consultative and social participation body.

During his speech, the new president highlighted the desire to strengthen the role of the CES as a space for dialogue and consensus and pointed out that among the challenges of this new stage are issues such as housing, productivity and the economic diversification of the Canary Islands.

The Social Councils of the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) maintain close ties with the economic and social environment of the Canary Islands, fostering collaboration between public universities, institutions, and various stakeholders in society. Within this framework, collaboration with the Economic and Social Council helps create spaces for shared reflection on the archipelago's main challenges.
